FREEPORT - About 1,000 people were expected to cast ballots in the Advanced Poll in Grand Bahama on Tuesday.
Supporters from various political parties assembled at Pioneer's Way near the Foster B Pestaina Center, which served as the Advanced Poll for the five constituencies here on the island.
Those turning out to vote were law enforcement officers, including Customs, Immigration, Police, and Defense Force officers, the staff at Parliamentary Registration Department, and other voters with special reasons to vote early.
Some 7,865 persons had applied to vote in the Advanced Poll. Grand Bahama represented 12 per cent of the advanced poll voters.
Some 240 people were scheduled to vote in Central Grand Bahama; In East Grand Bahama 210; in Marco City 220; in Pineridge 250; and in West End and Bimini 92.
A number of police officers were stationed at the Foster Pestaina Center to maintain peace and order among supporters from the FNM, DNA and PLP.
Norris Bain, FNM Marco City candidate, was confident that uniformed officers will support the FNM party.
"Under the FNM, there has been improved infrastructure provided for uniformed officers and many have been elevated in their careers," he said.
Gregory Moss, the PLP candidate for Marco City, was contacted for comment but our call was not returned up to press time last night.
