Barracudas shine in Florida swim meet

THE Barracudas swim club shined at the Speedo Plantation Winter Championship meet in Plantation, Florida. Twenty swimmers, head coach Sue Coleby and recently appointed senior coach Travano McPhee took part. Gershwin Greene, the only athlete in the 12-year-old category, scored the highest number of points for the Barracudas, winning a gold medal in the 50 yard backstroke, a silver in the 100 yard backstroke, a bronze in the 50 yard free and a bronze in the 50 yard butterfly. Izaak Bastian, in the 10-year-old category, was the golden boy, winning a gold medal in the 50 yard and 100 yard breaststroke. The 10-and-under boys team of Christopher Neil, Izaak Bastian, Samuel Gibson and Devante Carey won the bronze medal in the 200 yard medley relay. Other finalists included Drew Bastian (13 years) who came in 4th in the 50 yard breast, 5th in the 100 yard breaststroke and 100 yard IM and 10th in the 50 yard free, Meshach Roberts who came 9th in the 200 yard backstroke, Samuel Gibson (10) came 5th in the 50 yard fly and 9th in the 100 yard fly, Amber Pinder (10) came 8th in the 50 yard backstroke and Devante Carey (the only nine-year-old athlete) came 7th in the 50 fly and 10th in the 100 breast. "The Barracudas swim club takes part in this meet each year as a preparation for swimmers seeking to make the national team for regional championships later in the swim season. "The club looks forward to the re-opening of the Betty Kelly Kenning Swim complex after many months to assist in the necessary training for our national swimmers," said a press release.
