DW Davis Pitbulls, QC Comets undefeated

By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net THE DW Davis Pitbulls and the Queen's College Comets are sending an early statement to their opponents in the primary boys division of the 27th Father Marcian Peters Invitational basketball tournament. The Pitbulls, the reigning Government Secondary Schools Sports Association (GSSSA) champions, and the Comets, the Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools champions (BAISS), are both undefeated at 2-0. At the Kendal Isaacs Gym Sunday, DW Davis made the HO Nash Lions their latest victim with a 35-22 decision, while Queen's College blew away the AF Adderley Fighting Tigers 41-25. In the only other game played yesterday - the third day of the tournament - the CC Sweeting Cobras also improved to 2-0 in the intermediate boys division as they prevailed with a 37-21 victory over the CV Bethel Stingrays. The tournament, which got started on Friday, is slated to continue noon today with 10 games in the primary boys division, three in the primary girls, three in the junior boys, two in the junior girls and four in the intermediate girls divisions. The Family Island schools are in town and are expected to begin play today, according to tournament director Michael 'Scooter' Reid, who noted that they were pleased with the performances they have seen so far. Pitbulls 35, Lions 22 After starting out on a 7-4 run, DW Davis stepped up their defense and surged ahead 13-4 at the half and were never threatened the rest of the way. "These games are very short, six minutes running time and a couple of time outs, so I haven't gotten to see the true test of this team yet," said Pitbulls' coach Mark Hanna, whose team has not yet played their first GSSSA regular season game. "But the guys played pretty hard. Our defense has been our anchor the last few years and that is what we are hoping to pull us through. We won three of the last four years. So if we don't win, we intend to be right there challenging for the title." Chino Milord scored a game high 16 points and Shane Rolle added six in the win. Alejandon Morris and Clemon Ferguson both had five in a losing effort. Comets 41, Fighting Tigers 25 They have been on an offensive tear and although they went into a scoring slump in the middle of the game, AF Adderley still couldn't stop Queen's College. The Comets burst out to an impressive 12-0 lead before the Fighting Tigers finally got on the scoreboard. At the half, the Comets extended their lead to 25-15, but at the end of the third, they were up 27-19. "I felt good about the first half, but they started to play sluggish and then they picked it up at the end of the game," said Queen's College coach Smith. "We started strong and finished strong. I was pleased." Smith credited their summer programme to their intensity, just in the tournament, but their early start in the BAISS where both their junior and senior boys teams are still undefeated. Daejour Adderley canned a game high 18 and Isiash Collie added six in the win. Jamal Simon paced the losers with a side high 17. Cobras 37, Stingrays 21 Taking an 18-10 lead into the half-time break, CC Sweeting turned up the heat in the third quarter on an 11-2 spurt and they used another 12-5 span in the fourth to seal another win. "I think the guys came out a little flat, but later in the second half, we came out with better defense and they played much better," said Cobras' coach Audrey Martin. "If we play hard the rest of the tournament, especially on the defense, I'm sure that we will be right there down the stretch in the tournament." Alvano Miller scored a game high 20 and Braymond Jones had nine in the win. Qye Gibson scored 13 in the loss. In games played over the first two days: Friday - Carlton Francis def. Genesis 23-18; Mt.
