Knights polish off Cougars 73-41

By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net Coach Trevor Grant may have one of the youngest squads he has had to work with in quite some time. But he's confident that his CR Walker Knights will be able to make their presence felt at the 30th Hugh Campbell Basketball Classic. At the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium Tuesday, the Knights polished off the Charles W Saunders Cougars 73-41 to begin their appearance in the prestigious week-long senior boys basketball tournament. "Once we get our chemistry right, you can expect us to go all the way," Grant said. "The problem is right now is that we have a fairly right team. The oldest player on my team is 17. Everybody on the team is 11 and 10th graders. We have three 11 graders and the rest are 10th graders. And they are only 15, 16 and 27. So I'm looking for a good future." Grant got a 1-2 punch from LaQuan Nairn and Van Hutchinson Jr as they turned a close 30-23 half-time lead into a 59-36 rout at the end of the third. Both Nairn and Hutchinson Jr canned 10 points apiece in the third quarter spurt. Nairn ended up with a game high 31 while Hutchinson finished with 20. Jamal Saunders scored seven. For the Cougars, who simply fell apart as they watched their coach also get ejected for arguing with the officials, Jenerro Ferguson led the way with 21. It was the first game played by Charles W Saunders so far. The tournament, featuring 26 teams from throughout the country, including Grand Bahama, Eleuthera, Abaco and Bimini, will officially open today. It will run through Monday when the championship game is played. * The tournament got started on Monday. Here's a summary of the two late games played: Rattlers 57, Bluewaves 29 CI Gibson, still celebrating their Government Secondary Schools Sports Association championship feat, was simply too much for St Anne's to handle. Andey Bethel and Lavardo Mezidor both scored 10 while Rohoan Adderley chipped in with nine and Justin Gardiner contributed seven in the lop-sided win. Joash Boyd scored 11 and Ira Farrington had six for the Bluewaves, who surprisingly went scoreless in the second quarter as the Rattlers struck to extend their slim 13-10 lead to a comfortable 30-10 rout at the half. Pacers 46, Cherubim 42 RM Bailey are the defending tournament champions but Teleos Academy was looking for an upset in their match-up. The Pacers, however, got a game high 18 from Jahman Delancy, nine from Dario McKenzie and seven from Jeremy Neilly as they held on for the close win. Nathaniel Ferguson came through with 15 and Matthew Davis added nine in the loss.
