SOCIAL WORKERS ACCUSED

By DENISE MAYCOCK Tribune Freeport Reporter dmaycock@tribunemedia.net FREEPORT - Two social workers accused of stealing more than $1,000 in food coupons from the Department of Social Services were arraigned in Freeport Magistrate's Court on Friday. Sharlene Lamare Degregory, 52, of East Coral Estates, and Quincy Sophia Jones-Major, 38, of Pioneers Way, appeared in Court Three before Deputy Chief Magistrate Helen Jones. The pair was charged with two counts of stealing by reason of employment, forgery and attempted fraud by false pretences. It is alleged that between June 24 and November 16, while concerned together, the women stole five coupons worth $700 by reason of employment. It is further alleged that between October 17 and November 16, while being concerned together, they stole three coupons worth $420 by reason of employment. Additionally, it is alleged that on November 16, while being concerned together, Degregory and Major forged a letter in the name of Stephanie Rolle. They are also accused of defrauding Solomon's Wholesale by attempting to obtain goods in the amount of $420 on the same date. Degregory and Major pleaded not guilty to all of the charges and elected summary trial in the Magistrate's Court. Magistrate Jones granted the women $5,000 bail with one or two sureties. The matter was adjourned to June 19, 2012.
