BNT partners with the mall at marathon

THE Bahamas National Trust education office partnered with the Mall at Marathon to create an educational experience at the mall’s Kidz Corner.

The BNT created displays and activities that focused on the Coppice Forest Ecosystem and the importance of water conservation.

The first Saturday in July, visitors to the corner were introduced to a young friendly brown racer snake, learned about birds that live in the Coppice Forest and were taught to make a special eco-visor.

There was also a special display on bush medicine and an opportunity to taste a “bush tea”.

“It was a great experience and we were busy all morning,” said Portia Sweeting, director of education at BNT.

Water conservation and where water comes from was the topic the Saturday in July.

Visitors saw an exhibit on water conservation sponsored by the Royal Bank of Canada and participated in a number of water related activities.

The Water Lens Puzzle and Water Cycle Wheel were very popular with visitors to the area.

The water conservation exhibit is part of the larger RBC Blue Water Project which will provide support for education and outreach to create a greater awareness in the Bahamas of the need to conserve water and protect the water table.

According to Shelley Cant-Woodside, BNT education officer, the Trust partners with a variety of organisations to provide fun and informative educational experiences about the local environment.

As the manager of the Bahamas National Park system, encouraging strong environmental stewardship among young people is a primary goal of the BNT.
