Empowering women for nation building

IT HAS been 50 years since women in the Bahamas first exercised their right to vote. Since then, women have represented themselves in the top class of every sector in society.

Former Ambassador Missouri Sherman-Peter, advisor to the Ministry of National Security, said she always keeps in mind the struggles women had to overcome to advance their rights.

While speaking last week at the first monthly meeting of the Women's Advisory Council and the Women's Bureau, Ms Sherman-Peter encouraged Bahamian women to always remember the past.

"I firmly subscribe to the adage that, 'No coherent vision of the future can exist without an affirmation of the past'. Knowing that we stand on the shoulders of those brave and distinguished women that went before, and that spearheaded significant change in our country, despite the odds, must be empowering for all Bahamian women. I know it is for me, because much of what us women take for granted, our right to vote, our right to sit in Parliament and more, came from them. Our task now is to, as they say, continue to take it to another level," she said.

As the general election is well on the way, Ms Sherman-Peter also advised women to take a proactive stance, ensuring matters of women's empowerment are heard.

"This, as you know is the year of our national general election. It will therefore be a year when the course would be set for the governance of our country over the next five years. It would, in my view, be important for Bahamian women to be proactive," she said.

Policy matters women wish to see implemented by the Government and included in a women's empowerment agenda should be put through the Women's Advisory Council and the Bureau of Women's Affairs, she explained.

Upward mobility in regards to women's empowerment cannot be successfully achieved if younger women are not actively involved. Communicating, and offering mentorship to younger women is how they can become involved," Ms Sherman-Peter said.

"Whether they are conscious of it or not, our young women are an essential and integral part of the empowering movement. Getting them to further advance the movement, requires us to communicate expectations to them, give them guidance and direction as required to meet those expectations. Our expectations should be grounded in our confidence in them, and on values, ethics, responsibility and accountability, and we should let them know this."

Listening to young women, getting them involved, and assisting them in accomplishing their goals and objectives will also help advance the movement, she said.

"It is critical for women to know their rights; to know what is available to them; to have a clear sense of direction; to speak up and speak out; to reach out to others, both to give and receive help; to have goals and objectives and to work consistently towards them."

Ms Sherman-Peter stressed the importance of partnership in advancing matters of equal rights.

"We know that nation building is not the exclusive jurisdiction of one or the other, men or women. Just as it takes two hands to clap, so The Bahamas needs the collective contribution of both its men and women for effective nation building," she said.

"This is an important message for women to send to men, and as well for men to send to women about the movement for women's equality. Men can support women and the movement over the broad spectrum of development by accepting them as full partners in national building. True partners do not seek to place, or ignore, limits on the other, but instead work together for the realization of the full potential of both and for the common goal."

So all the students can make use of the official website if they have any doubts regarding the exams. PSEB 10th results will be released by Punjab school Education Board in the month of June.
