THE funeral for William Cartwright, one of the founding fathers of the Progressive Liberal Party, will be held today at 11am St Gregory's Anglican Church on Carmichael Road.

Mr Cartwright passed away at the Princess Margaret Hospital on June 7 at the age of 89. In 1953, he, along with the late Cyril Stevenson and the late Sir Henry Taylor, founded the first real political party in the Bahamas.

The PLP would go on to win the historic 1967 general election that ushered in majority rule.

Mr Cartwright served as a member of parliament for the constituency of Cat Island for seven years.
