Are we heading for a police state?

EDITOR, The Tribune.

IT WAS reported that the Prime Minister Rt Hon Perry Gladstone Christie called a meeting with all of the top brass associated with the Ministry of National Security. The meeting was because The Bahamas has seen an unprecedented spike in serious crime, especially murder since Dr Nottage's announcement.

The sudden spike in murders happened on the heels of the PLP government "giving in" to the criminal's demands. The suggestions by no less a person than Dr. Bernard J. Nottage that after consultation with the criminals the package of crime bills should be revisited, because the criminals feel the sentences were too long. This mixed message has not borne good fruit.

Since then has the PLP thrown up their hands in the air, admitted that they do not have a solution and are now forced to create a "police state" where the Defence Force (army) will take over the streets. Are we heading for martial law next? Has the PLP conceded? Was the message sent by Dr. Nottage an indication that we would be subjected to our comings and goings monitored by the Defence Force?

Mr Christie should have enough courage to say that he made a mistake in appointing Dr Nottage and Keith Bell, that is why he has to now take over the reigns personally to put to rest the level of uncertainty that exists since the appointments. It is very wise to correct this mistake early so that we could address the fear that has gripped our nation since May 7. Be careful what you pray for Bahamas you just might get it. Let us pray.
