Wilson may return to top post in Senate, hints PM

PRIME Minister Perry Christie yesterday hinted that former Senate president Sharon Wilson will be returning to the top post in the upper chamber.

Mr Christie highlighted the balance in age and geographical location of selected officials as the Governor General swore in ten new Progressive Liberal senators yesterday.

"The islands of Grand Bahama and Abaco are particularly well represented along with New Providence, of course, as the primary population centre of our country," Mr Christie said.

"I am also struck by the age-distribution that is represented by this group and, in particular, by the large number of first-time parliamentarians. Indeed with the exception of Mrs. Wilson who is a former and, I suspect, a future President of the Senate, the only other Government Senator with prior parliamentary experience among the 12 Government Senators is Senator Maynard Gibson."

Noting the appointment was a special privilege to serve the country during such a crucial time, Mrs Wilson said the country was at a "crossroads" with a populous in need of economic and moral uplifting.

Mrs Wilson said: "Whatever role I play it's my intent to ensure that in our senate there is a level of behaviour, there is a standard, there is decorum, there's an advancement of something that is positive.

"I think the upper chamber is a place where we ought to try to show that we can work together for a common goal. We don't always have the same ideas as to how we get where we want to go, but I don't think there is too much difference as to where we want to go."

Senators appointed yesterday include: Frank Smith, Gregory Burrows, Jerome Gomez, Julian Russell, Gary Sawyer, Alex Storr and Tanisha Tynes, Sharon Wilson, Joseph Curry, and Cheryl Bazard.

Mr Christie added: "This newness, seasoned with tried and tested experience, augurs well for the generational change that is already well underway in the body politic of our country.

"It is so refreshing to see so many new persons stepping forward to play their part in the governance of our country. This replenishment of the blood supply to the body politic is what helps to maintain the robust health of our democracy."

Seriously, if Mrs. Wilson is appointed as President of the Senate I would be disappointed. This is my second time voting for the PLP and I would be totally annoyed with this appointment. She was the president before. So can't see the point of once again making her president. She's not so eminently qualified that she must be reappointed ahead of others who have been appointed to the senate. It adds insult to injury seeing that he brings back Allyson Maynard to be AG and now Mrs. Wilson to be considered for Senate President. For both positions we have a stable of young men and women who are more than qualified and deserve the opportunity to perform these roles. It doesn't take any great sense of wisdom or genius to convene senate hearings so the argument about experience etc is a crock of ****. The PLP doesn't belong to these few families as some in our party seem to believe. Just as the FNM does not belong to Ingraham. Both parties need to use their sense and let these people know that the party doesn't belong to a select group of families. I'm really sick of both of these parties playing games. Mr. Christie, I will say this in the politest of manners. " Get it together." Trust me along with a few other youths in the PLP we will hold you and your government to account. Enough silence and giddy party support. Everyone else suppose to sit back and punish while your family and the old party hierarchy live and eat well. Then you put on this sanctimonious face and act like you so love the people. Well you don't love people and still keep the doors closed to them and their families. I'm sure that the circle of families in the rank and file of the PLP have benefited enough from the party and the country. Enough is enough.
