Sidney Poitier Bridge

THE bridge to Paradise Island was officially named after renowned Oscar-winning actor Sir Sydney Poitier today.

Hundred of spectators witnessed the unveiling of a plaque that will be placed on an obelisk just to the west of the bridge.

Mr Poitier during his brief remarks reminded the school children who came for the ceremony that they are the future of the country.

Prime Minister Perry Christie call Mr Poitier the "most famous Bahamian in the whole wide world".

"Indeed he is the most globally famous Bahamian of all times," said Mr Christie.

"But it’s not because of his fame that we’re re-naming this bridge for Sir Sydney. Rather, it’s because of the great things that he has done, both on the screen and off the screen, throughout his life."

Good that the Committee didn't stick with naming the bridge in honor of Comrade Sidney, The "Sir" Sidney Poitier Bridge, as Charles Carter had so indicated the name would be, while on the Daryl Miller Talk Show.

Comrade Sidney has never used or thought of himself as anything other than Sidney. Maybe some of our other local Royal Knights can learn something here.

Let`s give honor where honor is due, this is a beautiful thing. After living in the United States for most of my life one thing I can truly say, a Bahamian is always proud of their country and I must say the same for Sir Poitier.

How come no appearance by Comrade Johnny Kemp?

Gotta give Papa credit cause he resurrected our own Bahamaland's, going back to the American Bandstand era Comrade "Just Got Paid" Johnny for the official opening of the Red Chinese National Stadium.

Sidney arrives at LPA for Friday's bridge opening.
(Why isn't our own forever youthful Comrade "Dick Clarke" Charles Carter aging. So darn sinful)

(Fast forward arrival clip to to 3.50).
