Anger over sand removal

ANGRY residents of eastern New Providence are asking why nothing is being done about a barge which they claim has been illegally removing sand from the seabed off Salt Cay.

The concerned person who took this photo of a tractor piling sand on the deck of the barge on November 4, said the barge returned the next day as well.

He said: “Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island suffered enough from hurricane Sandy, but experts will tell you that removal of offshore sand will surely provide a slow death to Cabbage Beach.

“Who is in charge, and when will the madness stop?”

On October 30, residents called The Tribune to complain about the “eyesore” created by the barge, which had been towed into the area between Dicks Point and Salt Cay, otherwise known as Blue Lagoon Island, by a rusted tug boat.

There has been no response from the authorities since the issue first arose.
