FREEDOM FARM

REGISTRATION

FINAL registration for the Freedom Farm Baseball League will close on Saturday, October 27. The showcase of new players for each division will be 10am Saturday, November 3 for the Coach Pitch, 11-12 and 13-15 divisions at and 3pm Sunday, November 4 for the 9-10 division only. The league is also expected to introduce girls’ softball into its programme. The league is looking for junior girls aged 14 and under.

CHAMPION Amateur Boxing Club continued its 19th annual L Garth

Wright Golden Glove Boxing Tournament at the Wulff Road Boxing Square on Saturday. The following results were posted:

Walter Sawyer defeated Jaicel Moxey 9-7; Gabriel Newbold def. Steven Moncur 17-13; Kiotell Ferguson def. John Brown 9-8; Marco Fernander def. Jeffery Moxey 19-12; Doncyn Cartwright def. Shaunrico Butler 16-12; Ashton Sturrup def. Theodore Mott 11-10; Alfred Poitier def. Jason Russell 16-11; Don Rolle def. Donovan Taylor 7-5 and Kiotell Ferguson def. Rosco Armbrister 16-14.

The best fight of the night was between Kiotell Ferguson and John Brown. The most improved boxer was Ashton Sturrup. Marco Fernander was named the most valuable boxer.

Week three of the tournament is set to start 6pm Saturday. The Inagua Amateur boxing team is expected to participate.

The tournament is being sponsored by Nirvana Beach, the d’Albenas Agency, Commonwealth Bank, Bahamas Vision Centre, Wallace-Whitfield & Co and Battery & Tyre Specialist Limited.

BBF COACHES CLINIC

THE Bahamas Basketball Federation (BBF) has announced that it is slated to host FIBA Level I and II coaches’ certification clinics in Nassau October 24-27.

The clinic is scheduled to commence Wednesday at CC Sweeting Senior High school, Kendal Isaacs Gym Thursday and on the College of the Bahamas (COB) campus on Friday and Saturday.

“It should be known that the federation is very excited to embark on such an educational programme as it seeks to develop the coaching aspect of basketball and move the sport forward in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas,” said Mario Bowleg, first vice president of the BBF.

Coach Julio Lamas of Argentina – FIBA Americas Basketball Academy - will conduct the sessions, assisted by coach Edwin Pena of Puerto Rico.

All coaches who successfully complete the course will be awarded a FIBA certificate indicating their national and international level of coaching.

NPVA ACTION

THE New Providence Volleyball Association continued its regular season with another double header at the DW Davis Gym on Sunday.

In the women’s opener, the College of the Bahamas (COB) Lady Caribs defeated the Lady Techs in four sets 25-16, 25-21, 21-25 and 25-19. The best scorer for the Lady Caribs was Aikia Rose with 14 points and in the losing effort was Robertha Hudson had 10 points.

In the men’s feature game, the Police Crimestoppers defeated the Saints in four sets 25-18, 27-25, 19-25 and 25-20. No individual stats were available.

SCHOOLS

AFTER taking a break for mid-term, the Archdiocesan Primary Schools are slated to continue their basketball tournament on Wednesday at Loyola Hall, Gladstone Road, with a double header on tap, starting at 4pm. In the opener, Our Lady’s Blue Flames will take on St Thomas More Sparks. That will be followed by the feature game between the St Francis/Joseph Shockers and Xavier’s Giants.

MEETING

THE Baptist Sports Council will hold a final team registration meeting for its softball classic set for 10am Saturday at the Bahamas Baptist College, Jean Street. The classic will begin on Saturday, November 10, at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex. It will feature competition in the 19-and-under, co-ed and men’s divisions. All interested churches are asked to have two representatives present as the schedule for opening day will be confirmed.
