GEORGETOWN – Environmentalists were in Exuma over the weekend to investigate three wrecks that have been left to deteriorate on a local beach for more than a decade.

The seriously corroded vessels – one tug-boat and two barges – have become an eyesore for Exumans and visitors alike.

There is also concern that the structures could become hazardous to those who frequent the coastline or use the surrounding waterways.

Coastal Awareness Committee chairman Earlston McPhee and Stuart Cove, chairman of the Marine Sub-committee are hoping to move the wrecks and sink them in deeper water, creating an artificial reef for snorkelers and scuba divers.

Mr Cove later conducted an underwater assessment of the wrecks.

Using the information he collected, officials are expected to work out the next step in rectifying the situation.
