Cable: Cellular battle 'two to three years away'

Cable Bahamas believes that competition in the Bahamian cellular market is “at best two to three years away”, making it “premature” to devise a pricing regime for calls between mobile phones.

Responding to comments by both the Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) and Digicel over the recent Utilities Regulation & Competition Authority (URCA) consultation on call termination services, the BISX-listed communications provider shot down Digicel’s proposal for a ‘calling party pays’ charging regime in the Bahamian cellular market.

Digicel had called for this to be introduced for calls to cellular phones from fixed-line and other cellular handsets, and suggested that a termination rate equivalent to BTC’s 6.03 cents per minute for international calls be set.

But, pointing out that BTC’s cellular monopoly is set to continue well into 2014 (April 6, 2014, being the date at which the auction process for a second licence can start), Cable Bahamas said Digicel’s suggestions were ahead of the game.

“With no other parties even granted a licence to provide mobile services at the current time, the prospect of mobile competition in the Bahamas is at best two to three years away given the timeframes necessary to design and build mobile network facilities and launch new, alternative mobile services,” the BISX-listed communications provider told URCA.

“Consequently, Cable Bahamas considers that it would be premature in the context of the present proceeding to adopt any specific charging regime for mobile-to-mobile services, let alone set interim domestic mobile termination rates for such services, as suggested by Digicel.”

Cable Bahamas is thus placing the true arrival of competition in the Bahamian cellular market as coming in 2015-2016, meaning consumers have to wait a bit longer for choice and, potentially, improved prices and services.

This places the company at odds with the majority shareholder for its main rival, BTC, and the Government.

Tony Rice, Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC) chief executive, told a June conference call that he expected cellular competition in the Bahamas to arrive in late 2014 - a year to two ahead of Cable Bahamas expectations. And his analysis was agreed with by Prime Minister Perry Christie.

“We’ll be ready for competition as and when it comes. Our guess is towards the end of next year,” Mr Rice said at the time. “[That’s] what we’re anticipating. But let’s wait and see what emerges from that process.

“Obviously, there has to be a licensing process. I don’t know who it will be, so we’ll have to wait and see, but we’ll be ready whenever that crystallises.”

And he added: “The answer is that the liberalisation can kick-off, the process can kick-off, from April 1, 2014, under the agreement that we had with the Government.

“We are anticipating that that will be the case, and we are getting on with structuring BTC in a way that it can be ready for competition.”

I'm not actually sure - I bring everything to H&R block and they tell me what I owe[.][1] I imagine it has something to do with a lot of the business expenses being deductible[,][2] plus paying a huge amount of student loan interest and getting an education credit for being in school part of the year. I used to do my own taxes but once I owned a business I was afraid of making a mistake, and I figured it would cost me more to miss a deduction than I would save doing them alone. Sorry that isn't more helpful.

They should wait few more years before taking a decision on this pricing issue. However, they should also focus on improving the quality of overall communication, business owners should strive to make their communication system absolutely flawless. For my business I have chosen <a href="http://telisys.net/products.html">ESI phone system from Telisys.net</a>.

They still have plenty of time to decide a price structure for the cellular services there. They should rather focus on focusing on areas which need improvement now. The users should be given better networking facilities and they need to use the most advanced infrastructure cabling solutions. For our organization we have found the solutions we needed at <a href="http://www.qccusa.com/solutions/infrast…">http://www.qccusa.com/solutions/infrast…</a>.

I think that Cable Bahamas is absolutely right in its view about the cellular market. It would indeed be too early to come up with a pricing regime. The government and the mobile companies should wait for few more years. In the meantime if any new <a href="http://www.mobilsat.com">mobile satellite company</a> emerges then the government will have to reconsider its plan.

Now that there is an advanced telecommunication technology available, the service providers are doing their best to grab the biggest piece of market. But the users often find it hard to deal with so many advanced gadgets, if you too are having trouble with your latest gadget then you can contact <a href="http://ihummingbird.net/what-we-do.php">http://ihummingbird.net/what-we-do.php</a> for help.

No matter how many service providers are there in the market, they should consider offering best service at a reasonable rate to the users. However, the business owners too need to find the right communication solutions, for their communication needs they should consider approaching companies which offer <a href="http://www.ateleco.com/phone-systems-bu…">business phone system in Atlanta</a>.

Before taking any final decision on this they have to make sure that they are keeping the services affordable. However, when it comes to finding communication devices and equipments at a good price you have to go online, in fact if you need <a href="http://www.micromagic2way.com/150w-dupl…">duplexer in NYC</a> you can find that online as well.

The competition between two leading companies should not start now but there is no denying the fact that a healthy competition would ensure a better service here. However, the business persons need more than just good communication solutions, they also need to have access to cutting edge <a href="http://edstexas.com">network management</a> solutions.

This same script has played out around the world; telecom and [cell phone][1] companies are never fans of competition. One thing is certain thou, competition is good for consumers they can delay it as long as they want but they can never stop it. This same thing happened with [page plus phones][2] only a few years ago.
