AMID international scrutiny over abuse allegations at the detention centre, Tourism Minister Obie Wilchcombe said he will continue to promote a “positive image of our country.”

It was following lengthy protests in Miami and continued discussion – both here and abroad, that the government announced they are investigating allegations of abuse to Cuban detainees.
When asked what he is doing regarding the country’s image in the aftermath of the allegations and subsequent publicity, Mr Wilchcombe said his ministry is continuing to promote the Bahamas as “a country of peace and love.”
“(We are) continuing to press on with our positive image of our country and to show the world that, notwithstanding what some have said, we are a country of peace and love and we welcome visitors from all over the world,” he said.
“I believe that’s been effective because we’ve not had any negative push-back in reference to this matter and we’ll continue to carry the message about the Bahamas.”

Mr Wilchcombe also noted the prime minister’s trip to Washington where Mr Wilchcombe believes the prime minister “will be talking about the image of the Bahamas.”
