Numb-nuts forgot the two biggest easy things that could be done about crime:
1) Deal with the illegal immigrant problem as they are a major factor in crime. Whoever controls the cocaine and drug trade also controls the illegal weapons trade...Haitians!
2) Implement sustained road block checks at strategic roaming locations to prevent criminals freedom of movement with vehicles filled with firearms.
Will someone please find out where Hubert Ingraham is so Perry Christie can get a first hand look at his not too distant Christmas future!

Before rolling out these initiatives, they should do whatever it takes, meaning consultation with the judiciary and implement some laws to stop bail for accused murderers.
This BS-rethopric smells awfully like the ministry of education's strategic plans.
No one checks that they will be implemented.

A few sort months ago I responded to comments made by the commissioner of police to the effect that crime, more specifically murder, was gang members killing up each other and criminals shooting up each other. My response was that regardless of who got killed, murder in the Bahamas was murder and all murder should be given the highest priority in brining the perpetrators to justice. I was further of the opinion that gangs may start out killing each others' members but eventually it will spill over into the general population, not only where ordinary citizens will be caught in the crossfire, but also become sitting duck targets to the gang warfare. Needless to say, and sad to say this has come to pass. Now for a little about the governments plan to tackle crime:

For the thousands of scared as hell Bahamalanders whom crime is all but at their very doorsteps, they must also be viewing the PM's new (rehashed) crime initiatives, as if only the government is willing to take responsibility for fixing-up a couple broken down police cars, then the greatest problem behind what resulted in an Open-air Mass Murder up at Fox Hill can begin to be fixed.. Like his predecessor Hubert, the PM also thinks that real crime solution rests with the lack of quality policeman's equipment. That we not only need hire another 1000 policeman's and not only arm them with machine guns but also to allow policeman's to flex their muscles upon the Constitutional rights of all Bahamalanders, Residents and Visitors alike. What's next PM, offering citizens an opportunity to "Rent-a-Policemam's" to watch over family members as they fall asleep for the night?

I would say I was dismayed, disappointed and left in a state of disbelief by the PM's plan to tackle on crime. In fact I think sixth grade students could have come up ith more brilliant ideas in a 40 minute class essay. But here are some additional things the government may consider:
1. There are just too many young men sitting idle in the island of New Providence and parts of Grand **Strong**Bahama. If only in the interim government must come up with some sort of service to engage young men from school leaving age at least until the age of 23 in something gainful. Call it national service if you may.
2.Befor the actions of young men become criminal and a police matter, government must find ways to intervene, on the personal level, at the family level; and on a social level.
3.Government must find ways to assist persons who may have been involved in crime or criminal activity and who now want to get out of these activities. Persons who may need to relocate to another family island and start life anew. They may need to be away from ole influences and inducements or safely away from the activities of gangs they were formerly a part of.
4 The need for more male orientated programs in junior and high schools, and more socially orientated programs. drivers education, family planning or parenting skills.
5. More stiffer penalties being meted out to perpertrators of serious and violent crimes, especially crimes against the person. remove the judges who seem to be going soft on criminals at least to another area
6. Consider the re-instatement of corporal punishment for these same types of crimes.
7. Establish laws that make the release from prison after a third serious offense no longer automatic. felons will have to o before a release panel near the completion of their sentence to determine I they are fit to return to society.
8 NO BAIL for persons charged with ore than one serious offence.
9. NO BAIL for persons with previous charges of murder, armed robber, rape or home invasion
10. Introduction of big brother/big sister programs.
11. Encouraging retired police officers and other retired civil servants to enter the junior and senior schools as mentors, role model and to assist n identifying 'at risk' males and heping to get them in programs to steer them in the right direction.
12. More youth orientated programs, not only on special occasions but some that are on a year round basis.
13 strengthening of the witness protection program.
happy 2014!

Judging from the venom you post you are obviously part of the problem and not part of the solution. I hope you have children to inherit the hate you are spreading

At least one thing is encouraging, UR 2.0 shows up nowhere in the list. Hopefully they've finally faced facts that it was an abysmal failure and a complete waste of money. Let Social services do the work they've been trained to do and let the police do the work they've been trained to do
And stop forcing the Commissioner to say how wonderful UR 2.0 is. No wonder Ingraham could say "...well he never told me that..."

The Chief of Police said over and repeatedly for the last two years that he is sick and tired of arresting the same criminals for the exact offenses over and over and over and again. According to him (Chief) these punks should never have been released on bail to re offend again. It doesn't make one bit of difference how many initiatives the PM comes up with, if refuses to address the bail issues immediately with murders, armed robberies, rapes, etc.as the Police Chief is saying The Bahamas will soon become like that of our Caribbean brothers and sisters with it;s citizens trying to move into the united States of America. Please listen Mr. PM sir to the Chief and stop allowing some Magistrates and Judges to impose whatever sentence they desire upon their family members and friends. Three strikes and you're out.

My Comrades no society can economically progress if the government of the day have become reduced to nothing more than an administration over a "Crime Thinking Society." Businesses and social events are economically damaged when your citizens, residents and tourists become fearful to freely travel around our Nassau Town. The PM and his Commish of the Policeman's are displaying that they have all but thrown up their crime solutions arms in defeat. This message is not encouraging to Bahamalander's on this first New Year's Day of 2014. God help our Bahamaland that at least one courageous leader of the people will step forth, protecting our families, residents and tourist, not to be the next ones to be murdered, robbed or raped. We want our Bahamaland to begin a new journey of returning Her back to the more peaceful days we allowed our greed to let slip away.
Amen!
