AN AMERICAN man has made an impassioned plea for persons to come forward with information about the whereabouts of his missing friend.
Todd Walsh contacted The Tribune via email yesterday seeking help in finding 47-year-old Nelly Alva of Lima, Peru.
He claimed she vanished after they both vacationed in the Bahamas.
Alva is described as having a petite body frame with very long brown hair and a pale skin tone.
She stands at about 5’2” tall.
According to Mr Walsh, he and Alva met on a religious dating website, Christian Mingle, two years ago and decided to finally meet.
They both flew into Nassau on November 9 - Nelly from Peru and Todd from the US - and toured the city for eight days.
Mr Walsh said he left Nassau on November 17, leaving Alva behind.
Before that time Mr Walsh claimed Alva had expressed an interest in illegally entering the United States. She had made contact with someone living in Grand Bahama who said they could successfully get her to the US for a fee of $6,000.
Mr Walsh last spoke to Alva, who was in Freeport, on December 15.
“I am just really scared for her,” he said. “I fear the worst. After reading the stories about the Turkish men who still haven’t been found after doing the same thing that Nelly did, I don’t know what to think or do.
“When I spoke to her she said she paid them the money and that she took some kind of a boat to get to Freeport. From what she told me it sounded as though she wasn’t being fed, only bread and water. I told her to go home, but she said she had already paid them all her money and that it would not be refunded. And that was the last time we spoke.”
Since that time, Mr Walsh says he sought to inquire several times with Freeport authorities.
One time, he says he was told by an officer that he could not make a missing person’s report because he was not a relative of Alva. On another occasion, he said a police sergeant took his statement over the phone.
The two Turkish men he referred to in his email went missing after paying money to be smuggled into Miami.
Veysi Oral and Huseyin Oskan were working illegally in Grand Bahama before they attempted to get smuggled into the United States.
Their families have offered a $100,000 reward to anyone who can offer information leading to a safe return.
Reportedly, they had been encouraged by a businessman in Grand Bahama who told the pair that they would be making “more money” if they were in the US.
Apparently promising them safe passage into Miami for $6,000, the men each paid the fee and were bundled into a go-fast boat with 10 Dominicans and seven Jamaicans on March 9, 2012.
Twenty-one months later, none of them has been seen or heard from.

Interesting. Met via 'Christian Mingle' yet plotting to illegally enter the US. Sad to say, but sounds like she had a plan to get out of Peru and into the US from when she first met the American guy. Doesn't sound like this will end well.

2. She is a wonderful Christian woman who made an error in judgment. She did not have ulterior motives when we met online.

When I asked her the last time we spoke, she did not know. But there are other witnesses who would know this. The police have done nothing. They have not contacted or interrogated the witnesses. Very frustrating. They will do nothing. The only hope is a private detective and they cost thousands. I have heard from other families with missing people under the same circumstances.

2. We spoke to Nelly in Freeport the week of Dec 15th. I spoke to her from Florida on the 15th, and her family apparently spoke to her from Peru after that. She apparently took this boat ride on the 18th of Dec. I left the Bahamas on Nov 17th, and she was waiting there for a month to do this.

Yes pray for patience for comments like this. This is "normal". Worldwide the persons closest to the "harmed" individual are **normally** questioned first. The
Bahamas is no different. There are many con artists who enter our borders in a bid to take advantage of (for the most part) the good nature of the Bahamian people. If you are not one of those persons then God bless you. But first things first, once the missing person's report is submitted, the police will verify the story.

America is the easiest country in the world to enter illegally. Why didn't she simply walk across the border from Mexico?
Why not simply fly or take a cruise ship from Peru to America, and disappear? No officials would look for her.
Were the Bahamas so easy to enter and remain in illegally, many more Americans would likely be flocking there, given what's going on domestically.
This is sounds like a serious criminal matter regardless of what's working here, surely questions are to be expected, aren't they?

If the story is true...Did her family submit the missing person's report. Secondly you've clearly stated that she took an illegally scheduled voyage from Grand Bahamas to port unknown in the US. No details of the planned route would have been submitted to any port official, this makes things harder. If she struck a deal with unscrupulous people despite your warning it makes it harder still. There is a Bahamian man who has been missing for a few months now on the high seas, his family knew where he was headed despite that info, coast guard, defence force have never found him. This story is unusual and the ocean is broad. (I hope she turns up no matter the scenario)

Nelly is missing, "if the story is true" doesn't help anything. Her family and I are distraught and her mother is in the hospital from this.
Her family is trying to get there asap to speak to police. I spoke to them over the phone many times over the past week on this.
"Voyage"- I have heard lies and rumors from some, one says she was detained by Freeport police, another she was captured in Palm Beach waters, another says the boat sank. People are spreading many false rumors on this. We can't get straight answers.
What is the name of this Bahamian man missing? Does anyone know if he paid $6000 also? While searching for any answers, I have found many cases of missing persons while they tried to illegally enter the US. Obviously they make their own decisions to break laws, but that doesn't mean they deserve something like this.

Anthony Hepburn was just out for what seems to be a regular sea trip. The story was covered by the Tribune. My point is, even with the information given by the family about his legitimate plans, it has been very hard to locate him. It is not an indictment on the lack of concern of the people searching.
I must say "if the story is true" I don't know you and I'm not an investigator.
Regarding the false info you've received, it's unrealistic to expect people who were contracted dishonestly to be honest in any other aspect. That's just reality.
*Anthony Hepburn - known as Tony - is reported to have gone to sea in a yellow kayak launched from a Lyford Cay property next to Jaws Beach at Clifton Bay at about 7am on Sunday morning. His car and boat trailer were found at the property. Mr Hepurn is caucasian, 6ft 3in tall, about 200lbs and has gray/brown hair and brown eyes. He is 72. He was in a yellow kayak and it is thought that he was heading in the direction of Goulding Cay off Lyford Cay on a birdwatching trip, and may have turned back towards the Clifton Heritage Park. Eyewitnesses report that the kayak was seen on a beach in the Clifton Heritage Park on Sunday morning at about 10am. However, the next day it was found further down the coast in an underwater cave near Blackbeard’s Steps at Clifton Pier.*

A nice "Christian" lady should not trust and cohort with criminals......she risked her life to go to the US. Why? She doesn't seem to be poor or oppressed in Peru. Tickets from Peru to Nassau cost US $1200-$1500, and she spent $6000 to the criminals. This lady was loaded. So why the rush to get to USA. It would have been better to find a US citizen willing to marry and get her a green card!....but NEVER trust criminals. I hope she is okay.

Pointing out her mistakes doesn't help anything. Not sure why you posted this. Yes she made mistakes. No that does not mean she deserved it. Also, she used her last penny to afford this crazy idea. Judging helps nothing. And your comment that she "rushed to get to the USA" is absurd. Over the years, she waited patiently to get the visa visitors pass, but kept getting denied. How is waiting patiently for years and years "rushing" ? "would have been better to find a US citizen to marry" um, no. A Christian woman does not marry for papers. Her mistake was trusting these smugglers, I don't think bashing her helps anything do you?

It is possible that she has run into some kind of trouble or is the victim of bad human trafficking stuff - HOWEVER, it is also completely possible that she is alive and well in the USA - happy as a lark - and just has the good sense to know about caller ID and computer IP addresses which could instantly track her location should she choose to make contact.
She has probably considered taking a cheap Greyhound bus a hundred miles from wherever she is to make a payphone call and then return - BUT ran into the stumbling block that Greyhound now requires ID. I suppose she could buy another fake ID in addition to the one she currently has and use it for the trip and then throw it in the garbage - who knows. Maybe you or her family will hear from her.

I think I've typically been asked for I.D. when boarding in Chicago and Washington, D.C., but not in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Philadelphia. In Pittsburgh they sometimes ask for I.D. when buying the ticket and sometimes they just ask for my name.
I've also used Megabus which doesn't check I.D. - if that goes where you're headed I'd recommend that to be on the safe side."

Many times when Americans cruise from Miami or Ft. Lauderdale to the Bahamas, they find that their fellow passengers hail from Europe, as well as Central and South America and they flew from those countries to Miami to board the ship. The seemed to have no trouble in so doing. If they wanted to remain in America, they could simply walk off the ship upon return to Miami and disappear into America.
People come here every day via Mexico and are never noticed by the authorities.
What am I missing here? This is a serious incident regardless, but the only way to get at the truth is to ask questions. Usually, people are more than eager to answer them.

Todd Walsh, please you need to clarify few things here. According to this article, you met Nelly in the Bahamas, why you do not mention that you visited her in two opportunities in Peru and met her family as well- I have pictures as a proof. There are migratories records of your visits to Peru. Nelly went to Peru because you asked her. You both were planning the Nassau trip for months. You have provided phone numbers to Nelly' family in Peru of the people who had holded Nelly for days. Lucy and Janneth. Janeth has the laptop of Nelly and her carry on. This information was given by you to the family in Peru and later confirmed.
You had communication con Lucy before Nelly was giving by missing. You talked to Nelly every day at 7 pm. Nelly does not have that company of exporting goods that it is published here. Nelly is a the daughter of an Funcionary that worked in a consulate. Nelly belongs to the potential Church in Peru, which is also in Bahamas.

Todd,
As a human being, please receive everyone's heartfelt dismay over Nelly being missing. What you must appreciate is that there are many parts of this story that simply don't add up. The comments where people are questioning the missing pieces should be upsetting, but as a sensible person they are not unexpected. You speak of her as a Christian woman, but yet she was a very willing participant in what I must say is very, very dangerous criminal activity....human smuggling. These are hardly the actions of a Christian woman and any character involved in human smuggling are usually the lowest of the low.
While relationships are different for everyone that part also doesn't add up, so various suspicions of you should be addressed also. While to you it may appear that she was coming to the Bahamas to spend time with you, to the objective person she seems to have been planning this all along. There was just recently a story of a British man and a Jamaican woman who had a 2+ year relationship and the moment she hit Britain's soil, upon marrying her in Jamaica, she left him. Just like you, he sent her money, etc. The way he thought the money was being spent it was being saved for other things. Perhaps she never applied for the visas like she said. Perhaps she has something significant in her history that would make the US government deny her admittance that you are unaware of. Because being denied a visitor's visa does not make much sense.
I think what is bothersome for many people is that foreigners come to The Bahamas to illegally gain access to the USA and when they go missing, the Bahamas is expected to make heads or tails of their journey across the open ocean.
Yes, precedence is to be given to life, but the story does not make sense and should be investigated.

Good points. I'm withholding judgement I don't know this person, next we know there's a website set up asking for funds to help the search effort. Lodge the missing persons report with either the police or Foreign Affairs both here and in Peru. Let the authorities investigate the case.

saying that anyone who tries to enter illegally is automatically "lowest of the low" is a horrible judgment. Nelly is a wonderful person who got a bad idea into her head, and I am not the one who encouraged her to do it. I spoke to her for around 30 minutes that last evening Dec 15, and begged her to turn around. I raised my voice and everything, as her sister and I were super worried about this craziness. She spoke to family, friends, etc she refused

I believe the "lowest of the low" comment was referring to the smugglers not the *smugglee*

thank you. I will have faith that God will deliver her. The hope is that she is detained either in Freeport immigration, US immigration, etc. ICE has no record of her so far. I check daily. They told me on the phone they process people immediately within 24 hours

So you are speaking with her family but aren't sure if they filed a missing person report themselves? They have a $100,000 reward without speaking to police yet? Where does Nov 9th and touring for 8 days come from?

Todd u got played but luckily for u there are millions of these so called christian women outside your doorstep.. Even better if you got a good job & some benefits, they'll find u...Unfortunately many of them are past there expiration date and mileage is racked up on lifes odometer into the 200000's by the time they discover Jesus. Anyone u meet online these days should be viewed with great suspicion especially one whose main focus is to enter the U.S. Hopefully u did not spend to much $$$ on her and can recover with dignity..

(If true) I hope you find him. But again these are people who've made deals with unscrupulous characters, neither Bahamian nor US officials know anything of the intended route, departure or destination port. It will be a miracle if you find any trace of them rather than lack of concern if you do not. There are multiple things that can happen to individuals in these circumstances from being sold into slavery to acts of nature claiming them on the high seas. Maybe you and others can give the Bahamian officials information on these contractors so that we can break up these illegal rings. That may be your friend's legacy.

Shouldn't all that info have been given to the police and foreign affairs so they can compare numbers?

SMH. Of course I gave all the info to the Police, but they have not done a single thing on this. I also gave all the info to Peru consulate. Why did you assume this had not been done? I sent this email to the Tribune because the police are not showing much so far. And that is also what the families of others missing have told me.

If this problem is so broad, it seems to me that Fred Mitchell has LOTS of Foreign Affairs work to do rather than tripping over the PM, Ryan Pinder and Khaalis Rolle (?) on the investments front. How does the PM allow these ministers to run over him and do as they like anyway?

Oh, it is quite simple. Some of PC's ministers have something on him that keeps him in line. He knows that if he ruffles their feathers they will expose his dark side and that will embarass his party and the country.

Clearly the Government has to step up and start enforcing laws on our waters to stop this large amount of humane trafficing that has been going on for years.. The recent fires in Abaco & our crime problems further highlighs the many dysfunctions, I see a Country without order, a place where the rule of law does not exist, a Country where anyone can illegally come and set up shop.. Government Leaders get up of your ass this morning and do something about this B.S, the country is swiftly turning into a third world shit hole..

There is a pretty sizeable Peruvian community in Freeport. Your best bet is to go there and try to talk to them. She may still be there, chilling under the radar until she gets the call to travel. Or, she could have already gone and is in the States regrouping.

I want to make something clear here: This article has a major error in it. I first met Nelly in 2011 on Dec 30. I went down to Peru to meet her for the first time. I had originally spoke to her online on Christian Cafe in May of 2011. The writer of this article did NOT send the article to me before posing it, therefore, did not know about this error until it was posted.

We believe these people are being captured and used for organ trafficking which I have surprising learned is a huge business. They are being killed for their kidneys and we believe the Bahamas does not want the truth to hit the media. Before Niyef's family disappeared he was approached by a smuggler named Kevin Higgins who asked him to consider letting his family sell their kidneys. Niyef was alarmed and told the man NO! The man replied saying 'I will get them another way'. Days later Niyef's family went missing after they were trying to get to the United States. All this info was given to the police in more extensive detail and still no arrests were made to even CHECK into this story. Nothing is being done! We are very aware that our families were involved into illegal activities trying to get to the United States but does that mean their lives don't count?
