Worker stole tractor to shred asphalt

A DISGRUNTLED worker destroyed more than 7,000 feet of asphalt on John F Kennedy Drive, doing more than $1 million worth of damage.

Police say it happened between 8:30pm and 9pm on Friday in the area east of West Ridge Estates.

According to sources, the culprit stole a tractor and began digging up the road in a “zig-zag” fashion so the road could not be “patched” but had to be entirely redone.

Police say they have no one in custody at this time, but The Tribune understands an employee of Knowles Construction, the sub-contractor for the project, was being questioned.

Sources say the workers were complaining that they had not been paid for “quite some time”.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Works, Philip “Brave” Davis said the damage has delayed the project for a few weeks. He also said the contractor will likely have insurance to cover the cost.

“I think the contractor will have some sort of insurance for this type of thing, so the cost will be covered.

“As it stands, the police are investigating the matter. We think it is a criminal act and when the police have completed their investigations, they will give their findings to the contractor and then they will engage the insurance company and it will go from there,” he said.

“This incident, unfortunately has thrown the project back a couple of weeks. We expected to be done by the end of August, but now we have to resurface the entire northern lane so we are looking at September or October.”

Mr Davis said he heard “rumblings” that some of the workers from Knowles Construction might have been unhappy, but “nothing that would justify this type of act.” However , he said, as police are still investigating, he cannot say if late payments was the reason for the vandalism.”

Police are asking members of the public who might have seen something Friday night or were in the area of John F Kennedy Drive to contact them immediately.

The damaged road is a part of the $70 million Airport Gateway Project that started in 2011.

The government signed a $67 million contract with China Construction America Incorporated for the construction of the project and the Bahamian construction company, Knowles Construction.

The project includes the construction of a dual carriageway along John F. Kennedy Drive; the rehabilitation of the existing carriageway for east-bound travel; construction of nine roundabouts; the underground installation of a 24-inch water main that will take water from the west to the east of New Providence; the underground installation of all electrical services and low voltage cables; the relocation of telecommunication and cable infrastructure; dense landscaping and the completion of ancillary work, including drainage, signage, street lights and accesses.

To facilitate the construction, the government borrowed nearly $58 million from the Export-Import Bank of China at a two per cent interest rate.

The project encompasses approximately 6.2 miles of road, running from Windsor Field Road to the new six-legged roundabout on John F. Kennedy Drive.

The project is expected to improve the capacity of the entrance road system to the airport, as there is limited traffic capacity going into the downtown area; to strengthen inter-island communication, access and improve the layout of road network design; to enhance the landscaping along the gateway of Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA), and to provide safe driving conditions where the alignment of the existing road is irregular.

...and it is that type of mentality that really stops anyone from trying to do something good and nice to improve our Bahamas...some ticked off employee goes and causes millions in damage, delays and and over all bad taste in your mouth if you were the project organizers. Regardless of the fact if there was some question of salary...you just don't do that. Disgraceful.

It's not something "good and nice" for the Bahamas. The article says they borrowed 58 million dollars from China and are going to give it back to China by way of a Chinese construction company.

This has put YOUR grandchildren in enormous debt.

We just "celebrated" 40 years of "Independence" and yet we can't put our hands on 58 million dollars in our Treasury? What nonsense ! So that makes us independent - or does it make us beggars, begging another country to please lend us some money and help us to fix our lousy "independent" roads.

On top of that, the few measly coins that our people are supposed to get paid out of the deal (you know, our unworthy Bahamian workers) - are delayed and delayed. They can wait. Who cares about them? They're just citizens. That's the attitude that we get back.

We are at war with China (and we're losing).

i think it is a bahamian company that stiffed the workers ,also if over 2/3 of our yearly budget didn,t go to pay our uncivil service we wouldn,t have to borrow so much ..when 1 in 4 people work for gov you have to borrow and tax like vultures ..what we need is an change in our sexual mores and habits ,that is highly unlikely ,and if gov doesn,t absorb our out of control baby making ,what we call crime now is a joke ,,..we have the lab results in our back yard ,,Haiti ,Jamaica ,,you can,t make more babies then your gdp can handle and expect for crime and poverty not to increase ,,

It's amazing that a Bahamian subcontractor can stiff the employees, and the employees have no recourse but to tear up roads. Randol Fawkes must be just spinning in his grave.

honestly do you believe someone could take that much time and go that far without the police stopping him? looks like another way to borrow more money, which will not be paid back and line the pockets of politicians. this new road scam worked well for the previous band of misfits so you know what they say, why reinvent the wheel

I can't believe some people are actually condoning this behaviour as some sort of logical recourse for an employee to 'get back' at his employer. Sad sad state of affairs for this country. We aren't happy about something, so let's go on a demolition rampage...seriously people?

I totally agree. He's a jack@$%. What a stupid way to resolve your problems. Its is exactly this attitude which keeps this country in the toilets. The company should have made sure these workers were paid, but I cannot agree with this destructive and stupid act. He should be jailed.

My guess is at the contractor! Imagine this, the estimated cost of the work is already 500 PERSENT OVER THE ACTUAL COST; YOU'RE ONLY PAYING YOUR WORKERS A FRACTION OF THE SKILL'S VALUE, WHICH RESULTS IN A 90 TO 10 (90 PERCENT PROFIT AND 10 PERCENT COST) BECAUSE OF GREED, YOU ARRANGE TO HAVE THIS 'INCIDENT' ORGANIZED TO CLAIM AN INSURANCE !
i JUST CAN'T IMAGINE ANYONE DOING THIS IN CLEAR VIEW, FOR THAT LENGTH OF TIME WITHOUT A BIGGER PLAN IN MIND !(A MILE FOR ROAD IS A LOT OF WORK AND A LOT OF TIME!)

are you a civil engineer and a quanity surveyor ,,do you know how much it cost to pave roads ,install utilities ,water mains ,landscapeing etc , or is your 90 profit to 10cost pure conjecture ..remember everything involved with doing roads has to do with fossil fuel from the equipment to the asphalt ,,actually i would hazard to guess that you have no idea or knowledge about how much a project like this should cost ,,

Bet ya those working for the chinese company was paid on time, this incident is disturbing, wasteful and a disgrace... Now this project is going to run 100 million.. Many Bahamian Businessmen are synonymous with stiffing workers especially if they know u r poor and have little recourse to fight, and the government does little to protect them.. I am against anyone commiting crime or vandlism but I invision someone working in that hot sun all day, with kids to feed and being told next week everytime pay day comes..The contrator and Brave's family eating good, so there is no urgency. I am surprised they took it out on the road instead of the contractors head.. But the country will pay as a whole long term for this type of foolishness. .

You either have to be completely crazy or extremely angry to do something like this. I would like to hear his side of the story and find out what made him do something like this. ;)
