WHILE refusing to directly comment on whether he has any influence on Prime Minister Perry Christie’s decision making, billionaire Peter Nygard made it clear yesterday that he supports the PLP.
The fashion designer was responding to questions over a video entitled “Nygard Takes Bahamas Back” that has gone viral on the Internet with several PLP Ministers at a private meeting at Nygard Cay. It has been alleged by the FNM that the government is compromised by the apparent close relationship depicted in the video.
Questions on whether Mr Nygard was a major financial supporter of the present PLP government have also been raised, to which he told the press that both parties were recipients of monetary donations from him.
“Both both, both, yes,” Mr Nygard said.
“I don’t know how it appears (that I have influenced the government).
“All through history I must say I haven’t really known a difference between the PLP and the FNM it’s always been about people I have known the Prime Minister for 30 years.”
“I was certainly on the Prime Minister’s side.
“I celebrated that particular win (May 2012).
“I don’t think much of the last government. Quite frankly I think they were corrupt.
“I am a big fan of Prime Minister Perry Christie (and) it’s not surprising and I am that because he is a good man. He does a good job. He’s got a good heart he means well for the Bahamian people.”
Mr Nygard further stressed that through his humanitarianism he has not measured his financial donations, but that over the years his efforts have gone to various persons and causes.
When asked for his comment on the considerable backlash that the 8 minute 33 second video has drawn which showed his approval of the PLP, Mr Nygard said he did not see what the problem was. It was posted to internet website YouTube last October and has got 4,962 views.
“Yes we had people come in (but) I don’t understand why this all of a sudden (came up) the fact that I had a couple of Ministers here this particular time (or how it) has that appearance. How did that appear just now? This is at least a year ago.
“That’s almost a joke, almost an insult to write such nonsense.”
The Tribune has sought to gain comment from the Ministers shown in the video but without success.
