FNM Deputy, MP speak before House

FNM Deputy leader Loretta Butler-Turner apologised in the House of Assembly this morning for slapping Fort Charlotte MP Dr Andre Rollins.

In a short contribution, Mrs Butler-Turner said that she is human and fallible, and that the position she was placed in yesterday was not a "good one". Nevertheless, she said, she does not want that to be the kind of representation she wants to present to the people.

"If there is one person out there who feels that I was wrong, I apologise," she said, about yesterday's incident.

Dr Rollins also rose to his feet to apologise to the House of Assembly for his part in the incident.

He told Parliament that he felt "compelled" to apologise to his constituents for any "perceived embarrassment" for his part in the matter.

He noted that he was very sensitive to the importance of women in Bahamian society, but wanted to reiterate that he at no time made any lewd or "inappropriate remarks" to the MP for Long Island.

The Speaker of the House of Assembly, Dr Kendal Major, said that he has spoken with both leaders in the House on the matter and he is satisfied that it has been properly dealt with. He thanked both MPs for their apologies to the Parliament and to the Bahamian people.

That is the correct thing to do, they have saved the integrity of their parties and the Bahamian people they represent.
