THE policeman accused of fatally stabbing his wife and nearly killing her son has received death threats from prison, a Magistrate was told yesterday during the man’s arraignment.

Nathan Smith, lawyer for 41-year-old Jarette Stubbs of Sir Lynden Pindling Estates who was expressionless when he appeared before Magistrate Andrew Forbes, asked the court to remand his client to Sandilands as he awaits trial on murder and attempted murder charges.

However, when the magistrate said he could not grant the request, Mr Smith informed the court that there were threats against his client’s life from the prison.

Magistrate Forbes said he would take note of this and ensure that his client was safely secured at Her Majesty’s Prison.

Before this revelation, the Magistrate informed Stubbs that he was not required to plead to the indictable offences that he faced.

It is claimed that he intentionally caused the death of Alfreda Stubbs. It is also claimed that he tried to murder her son.

On Wednesday, November 13, around 9pm, police received reports of a dispute at a home in the Sir Lynden Pindling Estates area.

When they arrived at the scene, they found the woman and the teenage boy suffering from multiple stab wounds. They were taken to hospital by ambulance.

Two days later, Alfreda Stubbs died of her injuries while her son survived having been in stable, but serious condition.

Magistrate Forbes also informed Stubbs that it was possible that his case would be fast-tracked to the Supreme Court for trial by a Voluntary Bill of Indictment.

The magistrate set a status hearing for November 26 before Chief Magistrate Joyanne Ferguson-Pratt. Stubbs was remanded to prison.

I feel as if our police should have psychological testing and monthly visits with a psychologist. Police do go through a lot mentally and emotionally, so before they are actual officers they should go through a series of psychological testings.
