Man who opened fire on police 'was on bail'

A MAN opened fire on police in the Wilson Track area Thursday night before being taken into custody after leading them on a high-speed chase.

Police were reportedly responding to reports of gunshots in the area before the suspect shot at them.

The officers drew their weapons and returned fire as the suspect got into a waiting vehicle and sped off.

He was eventually caught in the Bellot Road area off Sir Milo Butler Highway.

The shooter was suffering from multiple gunshots about his body and was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital where he is listed in serious condition.

Police said the man was on bail for a serious offence and was being electronically monitored.
