POLICE are not certain of the circumstances that led to the death of a man who drove his SUV off a bridge at Arawak Cay early yesterday morning.

According to Supt Craig Stubbs, officer in charge of the traffic division, police have not yet classified the incident, which occurred around 2am. However, until an autopsy is performed they are treating it as a drowning.

“We are treating it as an accident; we think he may have missed the bridge and just drove off. I was on the scene right after the accident happened and there was no indication that speed was a factor.”

“We also did not see any signs that alcohol may have led to the accident as well,” he said.

“It is still early in the investigation and we still have to perform an autopsy to determine if he had any injuries prior to going over. It was the bridge just on the eastern side of Arawak Cay by the Frankie Gone Banana’s by the entrance to the Port.

“From preliminary investigations, according to eyewitnesses he drove off the bridge and onlookers immediately jumped in to rescue him. They got him out of the vehicle and he still had a weak pulse. He was taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital where he died about 20 minutes later.”

Supt Stubbs said officers returned to the scene yesterday afternoon to continue their investigations. Police have not yet released the victim’s identity but The Tribune understands he is 31-year-old Clyde Dames.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 911 or 919, the Central Detective Unit at 502-9991 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 328-TIPS.

Investigations continue.

I still don't get the need to publish a victim's name as breaking news before its released by the police, or at minimum to give the family respect and space to allow them to contact close relatives. Sure other people may publish it but does that mean you have to get in the fray?

Before stating possible drowning look into possibility of any other circumstance or illness that may have caused him to go into the water.
