MARLON Johnson, vice president of sales and marketing at the Bahamas Telecommunications Company, was tight-lipped yesterday over the terms of his resignation from the organisation.
Mr Johnson will demit office at the end of the month amid reports of extensive management restructuring at the telecommunications company.
He told The Tribune that while he did not want to specify whether or not he was asked to step down, it was “the right time to go”.
Mr Johnson said an announcement had not yet been made on his replacement; however, The Tribune understands the position is likely to be externally sourced.
Yesterday, Mr Johnson said: “I am moving on, I’m leaving at the end of the month, July 31. I had a fantastic time at BTC and I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to work for the company alongside such great and talented persons.”
Mr Johnson said that he did not have any immediate plans for future employment.
The resignation follows a July 9 internal e-mail to staff from BTC’s newly-appointed CEO Leon Williams.
According to Tribune Business, Mr Williams revealed a restructure that switches the management structure to one that is island/geographic-based, as opposed to function/job-based.
An internal memo announcing Mr Johnson’s resignation to staff was leaked on social media website Facebook last week.
The letter, which Mr Johnson yesterday confirmed he wrote, read: “I thought about the things we have accomplished and blazed trails on over the last seven plus years. The list is truly too long to list. I often tell my friends that I get far too much credit for the great things that the marketing division of BTC has accomplished.
“The accomplishments and the milestones we have reached are due to your imagination, your diligence, your hard work and your perseverance. The credit for everything that we have done belongs to you.
“As the company and the division settles into new leadership, there will be some disruption and some uncertainty,” Mr Johnson’s letter added. “But I admonish you all to stay focused and to continue to work hard for the company that has given much to all of us. I know that I haven’t been easy. And I am not very sentimental. But do know that I appreciate you and all that you have done and all that you do everyday. It has truly been the time of my life.”
In June, BTC announced that Geoff Houston, who served as CEO for the last three years, would step down and that Mr Williams was chosen as his successor as of June 30.
Mr Williams was previously CEO of BaTelCo – BTC in its former publicly owned guise – but was fired by the FNM administration six years ago and subsequently filed a suit against the government.
In 2011, he and the government reached an out-of-court settlement over the matter.

Really Comrade Reporter Ava you should be the one practicing some tight-lip proper journalism cause since when does the resignation of a private citizen like Mr.Johnson from his employment position as vice president of sales and marketing of a privately-owned foreigner company, rise to the level of exit, normally reserved to describe the quick exit of government officials? Besides, how Johnson will bow-out of he job, just might have more to do with the reshuffling of paychecks at BTC, by its new Chairman? Shouldn't you have too mentioned how you bow-out of BTC?

There will be more "bow outs" or exits as the PLP move to dismantle BTC as a viable private company ........... They are still mad that HAI sold off one of their prized gravy trains ......... sigh

Yeap...Marlon is no fool...he sees how the govt are trying to muscle back into BTC...it's already a sinking ship due to CWC's inability to lift an business that was already in disrepair into a streamlined well run machine. Let in the competition and let BTC implode...may the stronger and more reliable phone and cell provider win!!

Marlon Johnson is single handedly responsible for forcing hundreds of Bahamians into poverty by reducing the margins on Top Up and phone cards so low that persons were selling these products at a loss. He was the hatchet man for Cable and Wireless and he knew all along that sooner or later his strings would be cut. So now is GOODBYE! YOU SOLD OUT . At least now you do have some marketing experience and if you can't find another job,you are always welcome to sell phone cards! Just remember how much cards you have to sell to make your old salary
.not to mention the perks. At the rate of 25 cents a card he imposed on Bahamianscard vendors, he would have to sell 300,000 -$5.00 cards a year just to make his base salary
..go figure

You are the looney one! The phone card industry is over $200 million in this country. It is more than an occupation. You just blinded (or ignorant) by the foreigners who want suck up every dollar out this country...even to the garbage dump. We have a $5 billion national debt to pay. How will that be paid, dummy, if the foreign companies taking all the money out the Bahamas and don't even want to pay Bahamians for common labor? Stand up (for your country) or shut up!

When will the day come when there is more than one pony in the parade here! Having just one telephone company is like having only one grocery story...one gas station...one tv network....absurd...

John and Chaos make good points ................... the telecoms private sector needs competition that will bring benefits to the country ........... not more outflows as we are doing now

And Leon Williams has his work cut out for him. His employment is with an international compsny (IBC), and not just within the Bahamas. Putting non performers or political croonies where he need honest and professional people spells failure.

Many persons made a living for themselves selling phone cards. When the FNM Papa sold or gave away BTC, it took bread out of their mouths.

Someone just corrected me. Actually Marlon Johnson would have to sell ***400,000*** $5.00 phone cards a year at a margin of 25 cents a pop to make his base salary! He must be Chinese to do that.

Actually you must give the BTC marketing department credit. They transformed BTC from an "everything lock down and behind closed doors" company to a friendly, interactive, colorful, glitzy, "BTC on everything", sponsoring everything, happy party type company. But they were actually selling the dirty rigid rocks and highly polluted water at Clifton Pier for a sandy beach. Despite the numerous upgrades and millions spent, sometimes dropped calls and service interruptions are so frequent you wonder if someone is jamming the signals rather than just recording all cell calls. Some family islands service is even worse and a $30 data card they claims will last a month lasts only a few hours or days at the most. And the persons responsible for selling 80 percent of BTC's product were not being adequately compensated. How can a company spend hundreds of millions to produce and upgrade a product but cannot afford to pay the people who sell and distribute the proruct?
