THE day off worked out perfectly for the Bahamas team at the American Zone III Davis Cup Tie at the Palmas Athletic Club in Humaca, Puerto Rico.
After losing the opening match in the week-long tie to Cuba on Monday, The Bahamas had a break to recuperate on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the team bounced back to finally get into the winner’s column.
Playing against Panama, player/captain Marvin Rolle switched up the line-up as Grand Bahamian Jamal Adderley played in the singles, winning 6-3, 6-1 over Jose Gilbert.
In the other singles, top seed Devin Mullings suffered a rare loss, falling 7-5, 3-6, 3-6 to Walner Espinoza.
With the tie evened at 1-1, it came down to the doubles as Rolle and Adderley got their first win together as a team in the tournament as they secured a 6-4, 6-0 decision over Luis and Jose Gomez to clinch the victory.
Now tied at 1-1, the Bahamas have one more match in Pool A of the round robin format. They will play that match against Honduras today. Honduras won their opener with a 3-0 decision over Panama. Honduras was scheduled to play against Cuba in their second match today.
The two winners of the pool will go into the playoffs to face the top two winners out of pool B. The teams in pool B are Puerto Rico, Costa Rico, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago and Bermuda.
The playoffs are scheduled for Friday and will continue on Saturday. At the end of the playoffs, the top two teams will be promoted to zone II for 2015. The remaining teams will be back to play out of zone III.
In their opener on Monday against Cuba, the Bahamas split their singles and lost the pivotal doubles.
Munnlings was the lone winner on the day, taking his singles 6-2, 6-0 against Randy Blanco.
Kevin Major played in the other singles, losing to William Dorantes Sanchez 6-3, 1-6, 7-5.
In the doubles, Rolle and Adderley fell short to the Cuban team of Alfonso and Randy Blanco. The Cubans prevailed with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 decision.
