Concerns over police officer burn-out on 12-hour shifts

CONCERNS have been raised that police officers could be injured or become burnt out through overwork under the 12-hour shift system.

Police Staff Association (PSA) attorney Wayne Munroe said yesterday that the Royal Bahamas Police Force must improve its management of 12-hour shifts for officers to avoid police burn-out.

A day before he gave his statement, the chairman of the PSA, Inspector Dwight Smith, confirmed that officers had begun working 12-hour shifts to fight crime in New Providence, according to a local newspaper.

The newspaper also reported that a meeting between PSA officials and Mr Munroe was scheduled yesterday to address police concerns, although Mr Smith distanced himself from those reports when contacted by the Big T yesterday.

Mr Munroe also said he knew nothing about a meeting between himself and PSA officials.

Mr Munroe said until he learns more about the resumption of the officers’ 12-hour shifts for, he could not say whether legal action will be taken against the government.

However, he said: “Some (officers) always work those shifts and they sometimes work longer. The issue is how do you implement this safely and fairly? There are recognised issues when you work people like that.”

Mr Munroe said that health and safety concerns are more important to police officers than compensation for working the longer shifts. He said the police force must ensure officers do not become injured or burnt out while working longer hours.

He said: “Invoking 12-hour shifts always happens as a ploy. But crime just has peaks and valleys.

“Introducing things doesn’t really enhance anything at all if you don’t do it right. I don’t know what the police force intends to do. You can have somebody work 12 hours and still only put in the 40 hours a week. This just has to be done right.”

“If it’s 3,000 officers and I have to work you 50% more, that means we need 50% more police. We need 1,500 more policemen. But you can’t make up those numbers when you are recruiting at the rate of 50 a year.”

Last September, National Security Minister Dr Bernard Nottage announced that officers would be put on 12-hour shifts to counteract the upsurge in criminal activity that was recorded at the time.

His announcement triggered an outcry among officers who soon complained about exhaustion and lack of compensation.

The recent rumors that officers have been put back on 12-hour shifts follows a string of violent activity in the last week.

On Tuesday, one man died following a double shooting at Panza Court off Market Street.

On Monday, a man was shot dead on a jitney.

And over the weekend, a 26-year-old man was killed outside Pheonix Cafe at East Street South when two men in a black Maxima pulled up and and shot him repeatedly about his body.

The police can't work 12hour shifts forever. How many of our politicians work 12hour shifts on a continuos basis for the salary we pay them? Some of them can't stay awake even when they know they're being recorded on camera.

consecutively , daily , and on high alert. The last thing you want is a tired hungry unpaid pissed off big guy with a gun needing to give hours to your petty issue. It's not about handling it , they have wives and children. So there's no time for emotional release when they get home. There's missed obligations. Even if they get a check for the week , what time is that to cash in time before groceries run out. 12hr shifts and not even a service to do all theses errands for then during normal hours, bunch of shit.

This goes in par with the whole social media monitoring rumors this week. Reputation threatened = arm flexing.

Hey duck face bastard. Stop being a asshole. Police officers are people like you and I. Infact I would suspect you have a relative (s) who are police officers, so you have to be understanding in this matter. You claim you where employed at a restaurant business and worked 15 hours. But i am sure anything over 8 hours you where compensated for, but police officers are not compensated and are working extended hours, that is the problem. These people have families like you and i. (Well i cant say because your a duck lol). If there is something strange in your neighbor hood, who you gonna call (the police).

Just hire more positions one time. You mean of the $15million wasted on a commercial , we can't find $15million to hire more police to stay out later, process refugee cases, target human traffickers. I don't expect they'll add any damn job if they NEED more police immediately and won't do it.

I tried dating one. I gave up on their schedule.

There is no other country in the world geographically located so close to the united states and 2 of the most violent and poorest Nations in the world. Also with a number of other islands to police. so no other Nation or country can tell us from their experience how to police here but yet the majority of ungrateful Bahamians complain about the Police here wow.

They should be burnt out dealing with a dysfunctional social, moral, systematic problem that has caused so much crime... Police can only shift crime from one location to another they don't stop crime.. Crime is a product of dysfunction, its a virus... Believing that Police can cure crime is like believing one can cure the measiles by poping pimples with a needle... They are poorly selected, poorly paid, poor accountability and training, poorly supervised, and we exspect quality.. Now u overwork them to solve a problem created by years of social and moral decay brought on by years of self descrimination, greed and politicians who feed on ignorance of the mases for there own self interest.. This is why me and many other young Bahamian men and women leave and stay away for so long..U get tired of the B.S, self discrimination, lack of opportunity and ignorance..

here is a recent local headline
"Hospital Report shows 40% more rapes than police statistics"

there is also some funky issues with what is murder and attempted murder and causing harm that appear to reduce the crime statistics.

New Providence is 21x7, with 250,000 people and over 2000 police and 1000 defence force officers and they cant solve crime? Thats more law enforcement than most large first world cities per capita. Our problem is not quantity but quality of officers AND corruption

The Bahamas for the most part does not have a crime problem............. Nassau has

The source of the crime is ignorance, poverty and greed...The police have nothing to do with personal ignorance, poverty and greed... The police cannot stop worthless men from impregnating women, or irresponsible women from selecting irresponsible men to breed with creating unstable homes & fatherless boys are girls.. Nor can the police control politicians.. F'd up homes without good leadership and accountability generally breed criminals or irresponsible people... U can have 100000 cops it still will not stop worthless men for impregnating irresponsible women, mixed it with poverty & there u have the breeding ground for criminals....
