PRIME Minister Perry Christie yesterday welcomed the opening of a new RBC Royal Bank branch in New Providence as a sign of confidence in the country’s economic turnaround.

Acknowledging public anxiety over the proposed implementation of Value Added Tax, Mr Christie said he was encouraged by growth forecasts and ongoing development in the country.

Mr Christie gave remarks during an official ribbon cutting ceremony at the new branch in the Old Fort Bay Town Centre last night.

Speaking to reporters, Mr Christie promised to address concerns about the new tax structure - scheduled for July 1 - during his contribution to the mid-year budget in the House of Assembly.

During his remarks, Mr Christie said: “The banking climate in The Bahamas is going through a shift, therefore it heartens me to be at this opening, knowing that there will be people gainfully employed because of it.

“The country has heard of the recent downsizing of banks and it has certainly become a cause for concern. However, I feel that this is something we can withstand and transcend.”

He added that the bank’s 106 years in the Bahamas was a testament to its quality customer service, an initiative he said should be modeled throughout the country.

Mr Christie said: “Part of RBC’s philosophy is having a strong focus on customer service. I truly believe that this is the key to their success. This is a philosophy that we need to more widely adopt in The Bahamas.

“Having the best possible product to offer is only limited by our ability to give it to the customer with the right attitude. Good customer service ensures repeat business and a good reputation.”

Resign? Why? If my memory serves me correctly, the Bahamian people voted Perry Christie and the PLP into power with an unprecedented landslide victory. It's my understanding that when people vote for you, they want you. Perry Christie and his government aren't doing anything that WE the people haven't empowered them to do. As Bahamians we sit back and criticize government personnel for the state of our country, when the truth is, we're the ones to blame (simply because WE put them in power). This isn't the first time that Perry Christie has bungled the affairs of our country. Yet, the Bahamian people flocked the polling divisions and voted for him and his party in mass numbers. Now the reality and gravity of our situation has began to sink in and now we must all acknowledge the fact that our country is pretty- much doomed.
I personally don't fault Perry Christie and his government though. When the Bahamian people displayed how senseless and short- sighted they were, I think that's when Perry and his party decided that they could easily take advantage of us. My grandfather often taught me, "when you find a jackass, you ride it". So I guess that's what Perry and his party are doing.

I agree with some of what you say,but dont use the term "landslide victory",they won with a minority of the voters but won the majority of the seats

P.M. Christies' over reaching, grabbing at straws and bull-shyting is an understated display of a refined art at work here.
