POLICE arrested five people and recovered four firearms with ammunition this weekend.
The first arrest was made by Defence Force officers onboard HMBS Arthur Hanna, who turned the culprit over to police in Abaco.
According to police, a 42-year-old man was in possession of a 12-gauge shotgun and five cartridges. He was taken into custody around 2:15pm on Friday at a government dock in Marsh Harbour.
Later that day in New Providence, officers discovered another 12-gauge shotgun and six live rounds of ammunition in the area of the pump in the Big Yard, East Street. The gun was found after 6pm, according to reports, which indicated that no arrests were made.
Early yesterday morning, officers of the Flying Squad unit arrested a man found in possession of a Colt .357 Magnum revolver and seven live bullets. According to police, the man was standing under a street light with a group of men in the Park Close area off Carmichael Road, but ran when he saw the officers. The officers chased the man a short distance, and found the weapon after searching him sometime after 1:30am.
Less than an hour later, police responded to a call from a service station on Carmichael Road about a man in a black Honda Accord. On searching the area, the officers found the car and recovered a Bersa .45 pistol loaded with seven .45 bullets.
Police arrested the driver, a 24-year-old man, and his two woman passengers aged 24 and 25. According to police, the driver is a resident of Higher Drive, and his passengers were residents of Taylor Street and Millenium Gardens.
Police have also arrested a 25-year-old New York man for drug possession at Paradise Island. Officers on routine patrol of Cabbage Beach arrested the American for possession of what was suspected to be marijuana shortly after 1pm on Saturday.
