Minnis says he hopes that Wells will resign today

FREE National Movement Leader Dr Hubert Minnis said yesterday he hopes that Renward Wells will announce in the House of Assembly today that he has resigned from his post as parliamentary secretary in the Ministry of Works.

Dr Minnis’ comments came days after Prime Minister Perry Christie urged Mr Wells in the House of Assembly to “speak the truth” on the matter and to not let people “denigrate” him on the issue.

However, Dr Minnis said Mr Christie’s comments left room to question if the prime minister is truly in charge of the country.

“The prime minister said in Parliament that Wells must ‘speak the truth.’ As prime minister, he is supposed to speak for the nation and he should be protecting his junior minister. He should not be asking his parliamentary secretary to protect him.

“One must ask, who is in charge, (Wells) or is the prime minister relegating his position to the parliamentary secretary?

“The prime minister also said Wells knows his position and that has not changed. (According to reports) the prime minister’s position has been that Wells should resign.

“The opposition looks forward tomorrow to hearing in parliament that Wells has resigned.”

Dr Minnis said the fact that the controversy has dragged on for so long is “a total embarrassment.”

“He (the prime minister) is making the Bahamas the laughing stock of the world. If the prime minister has taken in excess of two months to make a decision that a five-year-old can make, God help us if he has to make difficult decisions, because it will not happen in this five-year term.

“In the interest of saving the Bahamas, this government must go.”

Last month FNM Chairman Darron Cash said Mr Christie’s failure to discipline Mr Wells for signing a multi-million letter of intent with Stellar Waste Management is an “embarrassment” and calls into question the country’s coherence in relation to local and foreign investors.

The letter of intent bore Mr Wells’ signature and was for a $650 million waste to energy plant for the New Providence landfill.

Mr Wells reportedly signed the document without authorisation.

The Nassau Guardian has reported that Mr Christie asked Mr Wells to resign more than eight weeks ago; however he has not left his post. Since the controversy broke Mr Christie and Deputy Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis have faced a public backlash in the absence of definitive action.
