Consequences when PM returns

ACTING Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis said the “consequences will be known shortly” regarding Ministry of Works Parliamentary Secretary Renward Wells signing a multi-million dollar letter of intent with a waste management company that wants to construct a plant at the New Providence landfill.

Mr Davis said “something” would be done as soon as Prime Minister Perry Christie returned to the country.

“We intend to do something hopefully as soon as the prime minister is back off of his trip,” Mr Davis told The Tribune.

“We have a lot of other things (on the table). We didn’t think that issue, what we do in respect to that or how we respond to that issue, ought to take the place of what we have been doing. We had some heavy lifting that we have been doing over the past several months, most of that has been completed and now. . .we will now pay attention to it (the Letter of Intent controversy).

“The consequences will be known shortly.”

The prime minister is expected to return from New York today. He was out of the country at a United Nations meeting on climate change.

However, Mr Davis did not say specifically how soon after Mr Christie’s return the public would be made aware of the consequences, if any, that might result in the Wells’ affair.

He spoke to The Tribune on Tuesday night at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Northern Bahamas Disaster Conference at the Meliá Nassau Beach Resort.

Mr Davis suggested that the government intended to act on the matter.

His reassurance comes more than two months after the concerns were raised over whether Mr Wells was authorised to sign the $650m letter of intent (LOI) with Stellar Waste to Energy Management and speculation continues to mount over who gave him the directives to do so.

Mr Davis’ remarks came on the heels of a threat from Fort Charlotte MP Dr Andre Rollins who told NB12 news recently that he would expose the identities of other people involved in the LOI matter if his friend, Mr Wells, was fired over the issue.

On Tuesday Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Chairman Bradley Roberts told Dr Rollins to “put up or shut up” over his threats. Mr Roberts called the PLP newcomer “egomaniacal” and ordered the MP to “shut the hell up”.

When contacted for comment on Tuesday, Free National Movement Chairman Darron Cash called on Dr Rollins to disclose what he knows on the matter.

Dr Rollins has since said he did not mean to suggest that he has information about corruption in the government, but only wanted the prime minister to deal with the matter.

Mr Wells signed the LOI with Stellar Energy on July 4, reportedly without Cabinet approval. Since then Mr Christie has yet to address the matter, only telling reporters several times that he ordered a probe into the issue.

He also told reporters last month that he planned to address the matter “imminently.”
