PM named one of Jones Communications' persons of the year for VAT introduction

PRIME Minister Perry Christie has been selected as one of The Jones Communications Network’s (JCN) 2015 ‘Persons of the Year.’

According to a press release, Mr Christie was chosen by JCN for developing the “political will” to introduce value added tax (VAT) this year, at a time when the fiscal state of the government was a “matter of grave concern of most Bahamians.”

Financial Secretary John Rolle was also selected for his role in VAT’s “smooth implementation and administration.”

Later this week, JCN will announce the businessman of the year and winners for the awards of sports and civics. The awards will be presented on January 22, 2016, at the Hilton Hotel.

For VAT introduction? These stupid awards handouts need to stop. The first question to be asked when the award is presented is, "why weren't you present for the vote on the VAT legislation? Is it true you were in Vegas celebrating a birthday while new taxes were being put on the people? Anyway congratulations on your award for demonstrating political will"

You cannot make this stuff up! At a time when we have over 25% of the population unemployed or underemployed, when GDP growth is expected to be negligible for the foreseeable future, when our credit rating is one notch above junk status, when government spending is out of control and projected to explode with NHI, when the balance of trade deficit is growing each year and national savings are at an all time low with consumers taking on credit just to make ends meet the PM is voted person of the year for introducing a regressive consumption tax which will exacerbate all of the aforementioned issues. What a joke and what is so sad is that the joke is on us.

The businesses are the one that should be awarded. The government has been trying to collect taxes for years with minimal success. The first year you pass it over to the private sector they surpass your best estimate.
