THE Court of Appeal has quashed the conviction of a former police officer found guilty of an early morning burglary of a squad mate.

Justices Anita Allen, Abdulai Conteh and Neville Adderley, on Tuesday, found there was no direct evidence to support 35-year-old Lamont Bain’s conviction concerning the April 6, 2011 incident.

A fellow officer accused Bain of breaking into his Coral Harbour home around 3.30am on the day in question to steal a $200 Motorola cell phone.

However, Bain denied ever being in the area, claiming that he was at home on Taylor Street after a late night at Paradise Island.

Bain had claimed the allegations were made because of a physical argument that had taken place three months before the alleged incident over monies lost during a gambling game.

Bain had frequented his squad mate’s home before the argument.

Bain, however, was found guilty of the crime by a jury and was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment last November at the Department of Correctional Services.

His conviction and sentence were overturned.

Murrio Ducille argued Bain’s appeal.

Linda Evans appeared for the Crown.
