Evans out of the medals at Pan Am Games 400m freestyle

JOANNA Evans, the rising Grand Bahama swimmer, finished sixth in the women's 400 metres freestyle final at the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada on Friday night.

The winner, Canada's 17-year-old Emily Overholt, was second to Evans in the morning heats but upset the pre-race favourites in setting a Pan Am Games record of 4min 8.42sec. Andreino Pinto, of Venezuela, took silver and Gillian Ryan, of the United States, the bronze.

Overholt now has a gold, silver (in the 200m freestyle) and bronze (in the 200m freestyle relay) medal at these Games.

Evans won her heat in 4min 15.51sec and swam exactly one second faster in the final but after showing among the leaders early on was overhauled halfway through the race.
