PLP Chairman Bradley Roberts yesterday accused Baha Mar Director and businessman Diosinio D’Aguilar of putting thousands of resort employees at risk due to his “inflammatory remarks”, “creating confusion, making inflammatory remarks against the government and placing thousands of jobs in jeopardy.”
Mr Roberts blasted the resort director over his recent comments, stating that Mr D’Aguilar should “do the Bahamian people a favour and keep his advice to himself” given his role in the current Baha Mar “mess”.
The PLP chairman sniped at Mr D’Aguilar, president of Superwash laundromat chain, adding that “when the public needs advice on washing clothes, we will turn to him. Until then, no thank you”.
His comments came one day after Mr D’Aguilar complained that “everything is being stacked against Baha Mar”, with the Government and its Chinese partners seemingly “working in tandem” to a “well mapped-out” strategy to remove the Izmirlian family from the project.
In a press statement, Mr Roberts said: “Mr D’Aguilar is clearly a part of the problem and should keep quiet in the best interest of all Bahamians and the project. Here is a man who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, never wanted for one day in his life, but is making one inflammatory remark after the other with the consequence of creating confusion, divisiveness on this issue and placing the jobs of thousands in further jeopardy.”
“He sat as a member of the Baha Mar board when without notice Baha Mar filed a bankruptcy application in Delaware, placing both crown land and the payment of over $100 million in monies owed to scores of Bahamian contractors and creditors in jeopardy.
He said: “As a board member, he helped to preside over the current impasse that the government was called in to resolve. He fully knew that filing for chapter 11 allowed the developer to walk away from the massive debt he owed to scores of Bahamian creditors, including the government. To date, D’Aguilar has refused to stand up for Bahamians and at least admit that fact.”
Mr Roberts also denied that the government has taken a “side” in the Baha Mar dispute and said the government is only concerned about the Bahamian people.
“To date, the only side the government of The Bahamas has taken is the side of the Bahamian people and the national sovereignty of The Bahamas. It was the Bahamian government that paid the salaries of the 2,500 Bahamian workers at Baha Mar while seeking a good faith negotiated settlement because their welfare was very important to the government. The government refused to allow anybody to use them as pawns,” he said.
“Any suggestion to the contrary is at variance with the truth. The PLP rejects same out of hand. In light of the role Mr. D’Aguilar played in the current mess, he should do the Bahamian people a favour and keep his advice to himself. When the public needs advice on washing clothes, we will turn to him. Until then, no thank you.
He added: “What D’Aguilar should be doing is spending his time convincing his personal friend to do the right thing for all parties involved instead of his harmful and unhelpful commentary.”

While watching him on Cable 12 news last night read the statement he seemed more angry than usual. And the whole washing clothes comment was hilarious. D’Aguilar must have struck a raw nerve with him, the PLP and the govement.

Quite a stark contrast. Big Bad Brad: a rude, brash and biggety remnant of the "Post-independence" PLP Government and so typical of the old style Politicians we absolutely need to get rid of. As opposed to Dionisio, an educated, well mannered, extremely successful businessman who has continually articulated his thoughtful and highly sensible viewpoints on Bahamian current affairs. We have had more than enough of the old style Politicians; what we need is a House of Assembly filled with new style Statesmen, persons like Dionisio. Surely we can find 40 good men and women of his calibre here in The Bahamas??
