EDITOR, The Tribune.
DR Ranford Patterson, president of the Bahamas Christian Council, rightly spoke out concerning the sexual degradation and public debauchery that were defining marks of the government’s recently held carnival.
I was, therefore, surprised to read The Nassau Guardian’s editorial, “The Diminishing Relevance of the Pastors”.
In my view, the editorial wrongly dismissed Dr Patterson’s comments and irresponsibly diminished his concerns.
It seems as if the primary issue for the writer of the editorial is whether people have a good time. I trust none of us would deny wanting to have a good time at some event, but the question that bubbles to the top is the meaning and content of a good time.
Depending on who you ask, having a good time can consist of some pretty vile and destructive practices.
For instance, many persons drink themselves into a stupor in order to have a good time. Likewise, many persons take drugs, no doubt, in their eyes, for a good time. No doubt, the people in Sodom and Gomorrah had a good time engaging in their sexual perversions.
No doubt, the people in Israel had a good time carousing and worshipping the golden calf. No doubt, the people in the days of Judges had a good time doing whatever seemed right in their eyes.
But all these painfully learnt from the Lord Almighty that having a good time is not the final criterion or ultimate standard of determining what is acceptable or not.
Sad to say that many in our land will discover that reality today, tomorrow, and in the days ahead as they are swept into eternity to face the Judge of all the earth.
How true is the proverb: “There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death” (Proverbs 14:12).

So, in summary, God wants our lives to suck? The Bible could have just been one sentence. "Thou shalt not have fun".
I think many are going to be shocked upon entering Heaven and discovering God indeed wants His children to be happy, that He will admit to creating the genitals and not blame them on the Devil, and that moreover He actually has a sense of humor.

i agree with you Hatter, I am a firm believer in Christ but you should not be quick to judge us based on what we indulge in as you yourself can look back and see unholy things that you yourself has done/still doing..

I am not judging you. Dr. Patterson is judging you. I think Patterson is completely 100% wrong.
My point is that the Bible (and their interpretation of it) is way off base when it comes to understanding a being that created the whole universe. Yes, I've done unholy things and continue to do so (by their standards).
In the end, they will see how wrong they are.
I often wonder if they truly believe the crap they say they do - why don't they get a 55-gallon drum and put gas in it and tie their kids in it and set it on fire - ie. a little home-made lake of fire - and burn their kids to death whenever they break the rules?
Sounds stupid?
Yes, and I think God knows it's stupid too - and there is no place called Hell (or by any other name).
