BEC: Full power should now be restored

BEC have announced that full power should now be restored across New Providence, after a weekend of outages. However, there were reports Sunday night of power problems in eastern New Providence off the Eastern Road.

BEC Chairman Leslie Miller said the power problems began on Friday when a fire erupted after an 'overloaded wire' came into contact with oil that had dripped into the trenches at Blue Hills Power Station.

See Monday's Tribune for the full story.

I wish our officials would be completely honest with their reporting. I wish our reporters would hold their feet to the fire and unwind the spin. Stop taking dictation.

*BEC Chairman Leslie Miller said the power problems began on Friday when a fire erupted after an **'overloaded wire'** came into contact with oil that had dripped into the trenches at Blue Hills Power Station.*

By his own statement, it sounds to me like **the fire was a symptom, the real problem was a system overload**. BEC was experiencing power outages in western NP from last week Monday. What caused the overload?

they should keep wires off the area to avoid fires.

And ladders too. I have removed all ladders from my home to be safe. The last blackout was caused by a ladder.

Ladders are indeed a danger, you forgot fuel though. All fuel should be banned from the power plant. That would reduce the risk of fires

Surely BEC has means of protecting cables from overload so that when overloads do happen it does not result in the whole island going down. And oil dripping into the cable trench?? You kidding me? Why is oil dripping into live cable trenches in the first place? What kind of maintenance practices do they have in place. But then again what can we expect from a bunch of quazi professionals?

These people who "run" BEC starting from the GM down to senior level manager levels need to be replaced ASAP!!!

***Should***, not ***is*** ???!!!

Can't they even tell if the power is up and running. Or are they just rushing to give us some "good" news, while they frantically check that the repairs are holding up ?

I swear whenever I hear "it's Miller Time" in future, all I'll think of is darkness and misery

This government has been in power for three years. Have you heard of any plans to resolve BEC's woes? There should be an effort to install at least one fuel efficient generator this year and have all others retro-fitted or replaced over the next five years. The savings from lower fuel cost and the savings from operating more fuel efficient equipment should make this possible. Consumes are growing weary of Leslie millers excuses and not knowing if BEC has short term medium and long term goals to eliminate its inefficiencies.

We have miles and miles of street lighting on each of the 35 major islands in the Bahamas. These can be converted to solar that can collect and feed the grid during the day and provide light at night. Likewise every home in the country should be encouraged to install a solar water heater and at least one security light that operates of solar. That way no one will be in darkness when BEC goes down (again)

The bungling dysfunctional incompetent Perry "Vomit" Christie is the primary culprit behind all that has gone wrong at BEC, leaving our country unable to meet its electrical power supply needs. It is none other than Christie himself who has allowed self-confessed Lady Smacker Miller and union leaders like Hanna to run BEC into the ground. Meanwhile Christie has the pudgy one with short stubby grubby dirty sticky fingers trying to figure out how best to go about restructuring the ownership of BEC so that Christie's PLP apparatus and certain of his select political friends and business cronies can make out like bandits at the expense of his caged black crabs that will be left to bake in the sweltering summer heat soon to be upon them. Yes, Christie does indeed like to have his black crabs served well baked come the height of summer as they crawl around during long hot unbearable days and nights, seeking what little relief if any that they can find. Perhaps some comfort might be found by a few thousand of these over cooked crabs seeking relief in the lobby areas of those well air conditioned foreign owned hotels like Baha Mar and Atlantis.

Comrades BEC have some serious ongoing problems with a number of issues but let's not forget the men and woman at BEC, who worked tirelessly over the weekend to restore power across Nassau.

You must be one of the lucky few to have a reliable supply of electrical power from BEC.

Comrade Reality-Check repetitious 3 seconds sound bites by "Pot cake" Leslie, over how overpaid workers being responsible for why BEC are spending almost a 1/2 billion dollars on fuel, and since BEC still owe Shell 128 million, it is impossible to cut them off and seek cheaper fuel. Pot cake also said his light bill is too high, but did he forget since he still owes BEC for electricity, it is the taxpayers who are subsidizing his light bill. So, we have a government in hock to shell and its all the workers fault?
