‘We must co-exist with global views on homosexuality’

PRIME Minister Perry Christie said leaders of conservative countries must consider how their nations could “co-exist in a world” where global attitudes towards social issues like homosexuality are shifting.

Mr Christie said that while governments must not seek to change the conservative ideas of its people, they must consider how to react to changing global social realities.

He emphasised the importance of striking the right balance between “people’s rights of access” and the imposition of restrictions on them.

“America has now legalised same sex marriages,” he said. “It’s happening. And so you have to assume therefore in the region we have this kind of discussion all the time amongst prime ministers about the conservatism that exists in our countries. How do we coexist in a world where the vice-president of the United States has said culture of countries do not trump human rights?

“Human rights are then elevated to the highest levels. And therefore you see the traditional norms of the world being changed and the levels of what was phobia are being rejected and are now becoming norms. Countries like the Bahamas have to look very carefully at it, not to change it, but how do you go about accepting it?”

Mr Christie’s statements came while speaking to students of the College of the Bahamas’ journalism programme on Thursday. His comment about homosexuality came in response to a student’s question seeking his thoughts about the publication of graphic, sometimes violent images on social media sites like Facebook.

“When you see freedom to the point where graphic sexual acts are put on the Internet, where persons are being exposed and where our kids don’t have that filtered to them, you may be discerning, you may be strong enough to understand it but there is something drastically wrong with that and you don’t have the right to impose upon me what might be your liberal views in life,” he added.

“There are certain things like respect, sobriety and discipline that have to exist in a country because if you try to give an instant exposure to young people who cannot filter that and have the discipline that you have, you have a problem.”

The issue of gay rights is a hot-button one in the Bahamas. The government has faced pushback from some people, even some Progressive Liberal Party MPs over the fourth Constitutional Amendment Bill about concerns that it could one day lead to legal gay marriage. However, the government has dismissed this argument and has stressed that the Bill only seeks to end discrimination based on sex from the Constitution.

Last August during a debate in the House of Assembly on the four Constitutional Amendment Bills, State Minister for Legal Affairs Damian Gomez noted that the US government placed sanctions on Uganda for outlawing homosexuality, suggesting that the Bahamas must be sensitive to the implications of how it addresses certain social issues.

However, Fort Charlotte MP Dr Andre Rollins stood on a point of order and accused Mr Gomez of using scare tactics to gain the support of Bahamians on the amendment.

The government has repeatedly said that it has no intention of legalising same-sex marriages or revisiting its laws on the matter.

In the speech last year referred to by Mr Christie, US Vice-President Joe Biden spoke about inspiring global action against anti-gay violence and discrimination. According to NBC News, Mr Biden declared that protecting gay rights is a “defining mark of a civilised nation and must trump national cultures and social traditions”.

He called the matter the defining “civil rights issue of our day”.

“I don’t care what your culture is,” Mr Biden told an audience. “Inhumanity is inhumanity. Prejudice is prejudice is prejudice.”

He added the American government had been instructed to prioritise the promotion of gay rights abroad.

And Christie has the nerve to hold up before us the unsavory Joe Biden as a shining example of morality while he (Christie) fondles that ring on his left pinky finger! My God, just when I thought Christie could stoop no lower in the eyes of the majority of Bahamians! Many empires throughout history have fallen (e.g. the Great Roman Empire) as a result of their evil decadence, debauchery and worship of hedonism. So too we see today the moral sanctity and global leadership role of the once mighty U.S.A. on the verge of toppling, thanks in large part to the grossly distorted value system of politicians like Joe Biden!

So are you saying that homosexuality is what caused the Roman Empire to fall?

There has been a palpable change in attitudes to gay rights in the Bahamas, even just in the last year, and it's a great great thing for the country. Every step closer to equal rights for all is a step in the right direction.

I don't know if you've been living under a rock or you're just confused. If a homosexual person can't marry the person they love, how do they have equal rights?

So if the rest of the world starts sleeping with goats the Bahamas should conform to that stance too?

Here we see Christie once again arrogantly ignoring the well known wishes of the vast majority of Bahamians just as he did in the duly held referendum on the illegal web shops. Christie knows full well (as does his minions Sean McWeeney and Rubie Nottage) that the vast majority of Bahamians want the sanctity of a 'marriage' between a man and a woman preserved in our country and not torn down for political expediency as has been the case in the U.S. Most countries in our world today and most of our world's total population remain firmly of the view that the institution of marriage must by definition be the matrimonial joining of a man and woman to the exclusion of all other forms of union or companionship between men and women. The very origin of the word "matrimony" is rooted in the word "mother". Equal rights for men and women can be had without destroying the sanctity of marriage by simply changing the proposed constitutional amendments as currently drafted to define marriage as the legal union of a man and a woman to the exclusion of all other forms of union between men and women. Doing so would in no way negate or nullify the "equal rights" deserved and being sought by women in our country today. Sadly though, we have a relatively small (but loud) number of individuals in our society who would prefer to see the equal rights of men and women derailed if they cannot also force on the rest of us their own preferred much wider definition of 'marriage' which runs contrary to the essence and sanctity of that important institution as enjoyed from time eternal by 'married' couples consisting of a man and a woman. No one group of individuals in a clear minority in our society should have the right to interfere with the contract of 'marriage' as it has been known and legally defined since the time of Adam and Eve. Allowing this would be no different than allowing someone to interfere with the well protected McDonald's or Coca Cola brands and the legal contracts these companies have entered into around the world with others. Sean McWeeney needs to sharpen his pen and do the right thing by the wishes of the majority of his fellow Bahamians and the free-world, i.e. clearly and unequivocally define the term 'marriage' in the proposed changes to our constitution as currently drafted to avoid the possibility of same sex 'marriages'. Gays and lesbians can have same-sex 'unions', same-sex 'companions', same-sex 'whatever', but not same-sex 'marriages', the definition and sanctity of which the vast majority of Bahamians and free-world want preserved as is.

not sure how you can possibly say that the vast majority of bahamians are against homosexuality. that's absolute nonsense. without a vote or an official poll you have no way of knowing. the majority of my friends have no issue with homosexuality and equal rights for LBGT so you certainly do not speak for us/them. why are people like you so threatened by this issue? if a church decides that homosexuality goes against their belief system then they don't have to perform the ceremony but to say that a couple cannot enter into a legal partnership/marriage by the state is just nuts. again, you do not speak for me or most of the people that I know so please don't assume your voice is that of the majority.

You really should read much more carefully. Well_mudda_take_sic says nothing about hating gays and lesbians and does not purport in the least to speak on their behalf. His beef or angst seems to be the insidious affront or attack (as he and others see it) on the long standing definition of a 'marriage' as recognized by most Bahamians and the free-world. We still live in a democracy under majority rule and therefore Well_mudda_take_sic is entitled to express his opinion on this most important matter in the eyes of many Bahamians.
