Carnival group trashes park

EDITOR, The Tribune.

This morning, I went with a group of cyclists past Clifton Heritage site near Jaws Beach around 7:30am. There was a group of Carnival partiers that had clearly been going all night.

For about a mile on the road, there was garbage everywhere and disgusting smells. Also an ambulance was just leaving, and we wondered if one of the revellers fell off a truck.

This supposed heritage site was absolutely trashed.

If you want photos, I’m sure it’s all still out there. Trash management really needs to be improved in a major way if the government wants to encourage large events like Junkanoo Carnival.

Trash management wouldn't be needed if 90% of Bahamian beach goers weren't filthy animals who left their used diapers, condoms, bottles and food containers wherever their lazy a$$es dropped them.

Nowhere else in the world does the population treat their own lands with the disgusting lack of concern shown by Bahamians. I often wonder if their homes are carpeted in trash or if they only treat their very own beaches this way.

"Bahamian Pride" at it's finest.

The party on Clifton was a private event I heard. Machel Montano was in attendance leading the road march...perhaps whoever held the party should be responsible for the clean up...

If you look around, all the mess along the route has already been cleaned up.

The sad truth is that the majority of Bahamians are disgusting and have no appreciation of their surroundings. Go to any public beach after a long weekend and you will see nothing but garbage. Look along any back road in the country and you will encounter some sort of household or construction refuse. The litter laws need to be enforced (as do most other laws in this country) and given teeth. A thousand dollars or 30 days of community service picking up garbage might just make people think twice before trashing our #1 asset, our environment. Maybe then NASTY NASSAU might get a different nickname.

It's not fair to take sides without knowing both sides of the story.

Firstly, practically every instance of littering I've encountered bar none over the years stem's from a lack or shortage of proper waste facilities.

This holds true for virtually all beach cook outs, fund raisers, regatta's etc. MOH/MOW need to get themselves properly coordinated to alleviate this age old problem of either not sufficient bins or inadequate collection cycles. Both of which leads to what appears to be massive littering.

I find it hard to believe that a group of revelers "intentionally trashed the beach" just for sport. More than likely the party was unplanned and "just evolved" after a fun time at carnival as NOBODY wanted to go home.

This in no way condones or let's them off the hook.

People just need to be more cognoscente of the need to provide garbage bags for their trash and remember to be prepared to take their trash with them.

The points you raised are valid. In every instance where I have seen trash all over the ground I have also found every garbage can in the area full to the point of overflowing. I remember when many garbage bins were put on public beaches and within days and weeks all of them were stolen and not replaced. We need those larger garbage tip containers in more place and someone needs to be responsible for monitoring and changing the garbage bags over the weekends and on public holidays. There will always be the few nasty undereducated humans that choose to throw litter on the ground. For them we must all pray that they live a short life and make room for the righteous.
