A Canadian tourist became the country’s latest traffic fatality, after he was struck by a garbage truck and dragged several feet while attempting to cross the street, yesterday afternoon.

The accident happened shortly after 2pm on Baha Mar Boulevard.

Superintendent Craig Stubbs, officer in charge of the Traffic Division, said the garbage truck lost control and collided with a vehicle before striking the visitor.

“Our information is the garbage truck was travelling east in the southern lane in a dual carriageway on Weat Bay Street when the driver claimed he lost pressure in his brakes as he entered the roundabout,” Supt Stubbs said.

“He tried to slow the vehicle down, but collided with a 2013 Kia Sportage. He then crossed the sidewalk on the northern side and struck a Caucasian male attempting to cross the road. The male received serious injuries to his lower extremities and was pronounced dead on the scene.”

The Tribune understands the victim is a Canadian resident who was travelling with his family on board a cruise ship, the Carnival Sensation. He was on an island tour at the time of his death.

Supt Stubbs said it is too early to say if charges will be pressed against the driver of the garbage truck. However, he said, the driver is assisting police with their investigations.

He said after the investigations are concluded, his officers will meet with the Attorney General’s office to determine the next course of action.

This is horrible to say the least.
The Bahamas just can't seem to catch a break. This is negative international press that we don't need.

Unfortunately, proper service is not a priority for government vehicles

Vehicle Inspection here is a complete joke - just another way to collect money under false pretences. They check neither brakes nor the condition of the tires - two things of critical importance. No need to go on.

Bad brakes and speed, it will kill! I would be not surprised if that garbage truck was doing at least 70mph going into the roundabout! See that everyday, as that is my route to and fro!

Forget suing the garbage truck company......Maynard-Gibson or one of her family members probably owns shares in it!

Interesting that the name of the Company on the side of the truck was not mentioned.

From the pics I've seen, it's not a garbage truck I am familiar with...but I am not a Westie...truck is a solid orange...sort of...between the unkempt body work...no clear signage that is readable from the picture quality. Does NOT look like any of the usual suspects like BahamasWaste, ImPac or WasteNot...some smaller company who appear to not look after their trucks...just saying...

Baha Mar- "On the Edge"

http://www.thenassauguardian.com/nation…

While I realize this was offered to another organization (I respect this one or), I felt compelled to share the link and offer how off base this situation has become:

1- "Govt initiated the scenario, but finds it a chilling prospect" that come 11/2 it might get what it initiated. The whole situation was predicated o NOT wanting the US Bankrupcy to go through. Once that was decided in the US, The Bahamian judge (with support of the Gov't i"m sure) kicks the can down the road and only does half the job of assigning the liquidators, but doesnt take action themselves hoping thimgs get resolved an they don't actually have to act.

2- " The Gov;t took a gamble and hope the developement wouln't end up on the aution block"???? Is this University 101 or how we run a country?

3- "Christie seems concered the process is nearing the edge of the cliff" all i can say is LOL, really Mr. Prime Minister, so US bankrupcy now seems not so bad?

4- "The winding up process is two weeks away and the time for posturing is over"??? again, the original date has come and gone, why is everybody so suprised.....time for posturing was long ago passed.

5- PLEASE stop talking and referencing anything to do with the US bankrupcy! The Bahamas and Gov't were always against it (Right or wrong" got what was fought for and now has the matter at hand. The situation everybody finds themselves in, has nothing to do with the US courts.
