Cuban row

EDITOR, The Tribune.

During my short stint in politics, I participated in a public meeting at which my good friend and then fellow senator, the late Dr Cleveland Eneas, quoted the following famous statement: “Those whom the gods would destroy they first make mad.”

Following the recent remarks made by our Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration stating his intention to have an investigation into a judge’s ruling I find myself invoking the same quotation.

How does this attorney at law and self-professed human rights activist have the temerity to attempt to flout the rule of law and begin an assault against the independence of the judiciary? There is a process in disputing the finding of a judge and it is certainly not an investigation to be announced politically in the House of Assembly!

Bahamians cannot sit still and allow this announced crusade against the Separation of Powers and the rule of law, strong components of a democratic state, to take place.

Also, if the Minister is satisfied that the persons involved threaten our national security, why were they not charged with the relevant offences and sentenced accordingly if convicted? Why did we hold them for such a long time a la Guantanamo Bay?

This is insanity! So are the gods listening and at work?

Yes Justice Thompson, Bahamian are inclined to sit by and watch this happen... There were other evil, unfair and atrocious happenings that occurred and that does occur... when it don't touch you'll, it meant nothing... now that the rooster has come to the door of the judiciary, I can now hear your loud clarion call...

Yesterday it was me... Today it is you... tomorrow it will be others... and so on, and so on, and so on...

Wickedness is wickedness no matter the form or the persons it is done to.

It is not just the legal bench should be regarded as such an institution of justice to stand up for... That place is of service to a certain class only.

We are not named or in association with Gregg Flowers and the likes who got a free pass from the "third branch of government"... we are but common people, with no big and illegal moneys.

However, we have had legitimate causes and we did not hear your voices lifted to defend our cries. We too should have been afforded your, and, everyone else attention and concern. Especially you who would now want to tally and spark a public outcry.

How is it now the blind fold comes off Lady Justice?

Furthermore, remember... they were just given 1.2 million dollars of riot gears... respectfully, I want to see those from among your crowd who are now willing to go and get the first taste of this.

When you'll a taste... tell us how it feel. We may then be inclined to come get some too. But now... don't try to climb up on our backs because there was quite many of us who needed to hear the concern for law and order as you are shouting out now. When we needed you'll to step up on our behalf... Not a word said... you'll stayed quiet.

For now... thanks, but no thanks.

Any Bahamian has the right to question the judiciary over something they do not agree with or believe to be contrary to law...right? Unfortunately however, his concerns may just be for show as he recommended the same months prior, according to the Tribune. The real question Bahamians should be asking is how and why known criminals, illegal immigrants are able to be legally placed in the general population. Is it that easy for criminals to start afresh in Bahamas? Where's the humanity for law abiding Bahamians who will now have even more criminals to fend off? An investigation can truly shed light on the laws that make it possible for this atrocity to occur, and hopefully changes to correct them.

My2cents, I can help with an input to the answer to your question "Is it that easy for criminals to start afresh in Bahamas?"

No it's not that easy for criminals to start fresh... and I take it by this you meant ex-convicts. But, rather, it is easy for 'Foreign' criminal/ex-convicts to get a "fresh start" in The Bahamas.

Bahamians are rather easily facilitated to remain criminals or become sissys, beggars or much less. It is offensive in The Bahamas to improve your outlook on life after leaving prison.

I agree with you. Seems like Bahamian leaders only become concerned with human rights, legality, etc. when it impacts a foreigner. So many disenfranchised Bahamians in Fox Hill will never get a second chance or sympathy from their fellow Bahamians.

Perhaps Ms: Thompson as she knows the laws so well. If these men have committed
Crimes in the USA and they are not wanted there and their own Country Cuba does not
want them. Pray tell what is the Bahamas suppose to do with them?

Economist says...

There is a procedure for challenging a ruling by a Judge of the Supreme Court. You go to the Court of Appeal. At the Court of Appeal 3 Judges review the ruling.

The House of Assembly is has no jurisdiction, only the courts in accordance with our laws.

So Birdie, don't worry your little bird brain, if there is a legal problem and, in accordance with our laws, these two ought to be considered dangerous, I am sure 3 judges can figure that out.

A very good letter Ms. Thompson, thank you for keeping our focus in the proper direction.

The truth is Ms: Thompson is a disciple of Fred Smith, watch their language. I look forward to the day when she will kneel on the pavement to pray to the gods she mentioned following in the
footsteps of her leader Fred and I hope that the FNM TV station will be there to record it for posterity.

At least he brought Fred Smith to his knees. It was good to see him there. making the sign of the cross and all. Fred and Joe Darville attend the same church.
