Sporting recognition for Ivan Johnson

EDITOR, The Tribune

Few of us know the publisher of The Punch newspaper was quite a cricket player in England during the 1970s and it’s about time he gets some recognition for it.

Playing for Worcestershire, one of England’s most successful county teams of the 1960s and 1970s, Johnson more than held his own and as a “former professional English cricketer who played for Worcestershire from 1972 to 1975” also topped the batting averages for the Young England Under-19 cricket team on a tour of West Indies in 1972.

Mr Johnson is a Bahamian sports icon, and a very successful entrepreneur who deserves his photo at the airport like other Bahamian sports stars.

A big question that comes to mind is why he has not been recognised after all these years? Could it be because he takes on the political class and their transgressions in his newspaper?

As we know, Cabinet must approve these honours, so maybe they are blocking it? But surely they would be above such pettiness?

How about starting a ‘put Ivan Johnson in the Bahamas Sports Hall of Fame‘ and place his picture at the airport alongside our many other sports icons’ movement?

Godson says...

What a proposal heh??? Your request spins to the very heights of idealism. You expect this society to move beyond their politics and see an individual for what he has overcome and achieved??? WOW.. man... what a request for you to be making!!!

Not to say that what you are asking is not a noble climb... but... anyway.., I applaud your optimism in that, every journey begins with the first step. Who knows, maybe your letter is representative of this 'first step'.

Hope I am not coming across as insulting, but didn't you hear that all the good that Caesar did was entomb with him... and that only the evil he did lives on? In any event, your proposal got my support.

The youths must know that when things are not working out here for them in The Bahamas, you can go off abroad and achieve and make something of your years. But at the end of the day, you will need to acquire some good memories of what you did with your years on earth for when you retire. Ivan Johnson did something with his years... The PUNCH is just gravy.

But Rick... I remember the time you spat on the ground... never mind the thousand of lives you help to bridge and light their paths to the future... too much cynicism I guess.
