THE Department of Immigration has announced that it will conduct checks beginning November 1 on employers in Abaco to ensure their workers have the proper documents to live and work in the Bahamas.
According to a press release from the department, the checks will be carried out in Hope Town, Great Guana Cay, Man-O-War Cay, the Marsh Harbour area and associated towns.
Immigration officers will require the employees to be present with their documentation, the release said.
The Department of Immigration also reminded the public that it is an offence to hire anyone without a work permit.
There is a fine of $10,000 or five years in prison for violating this law.
Both the employer and the employee are subject to these penalties and they will be strictly prosecuted, the department said.

6 weeks notice is plenty time to hide the illegal workers, as is commonly done in abaco.
