Off-duty police officer one of two men shot dead overnight

TWO men - including an off-duty police officer - have been shot dead in separate overnight incidents in New Providence.

Police have launched an island-wide manhunt for the suspects responsible for the death of a police officer early on Sunday.

According to reports, shortly after 1am police received a report that someone had been shot on Coral Harbour Road. On arrival at a service road off Coral Harbour Road, officers discovered the lifeless body of an off duty police officer who had been shot. The victim - who has not been identified by police - was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police are also searching for a male suspect believed to be responsible for the fatal shooting of a man on Saturday night.

Reports are that shortly after 9pm, a man was standing outside a home at Twin Close, Ridgeland, when a man with a handgun approached and shot him before fleeing on foot. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene.

The two Easter killings take the murder toll for 2017 to 43, according to The Tribune's records.

Investigations are ongoing.

Statistics indicate that there may be as many as SEVEN more homicides before election 2017. Also if the PLP wins the election and the police administration remains the same, the country will continue to record murders in excess of 100. And unless something is done to address the causes of murders, improve the delivery of justice and increase the severity of punishment, there is a great possibility that the country could exceed the 650 plus murders recorded under the PLP. The victims of murder will continue to be mostly young, black males from the inner cities and, as is like now, many of their murders will go unsolved and their killers unpunished.

No Party Leader has put law and order restoration in their plan !! Little things must be punished. Police constantly walk by cars parked on Bay Street for the day in clearly marked "LOADING ZONES " Nothing done about it, Maybe these Police can't read and are colour blind and can't see the yellow paint.

**................................. GNN Reports The Cop Was Shot 11 Times .....................................**

If this cop was indeed shot so many times as rumored, it could be characterized as a crime of passion or revenge, which could possibly translate to him abusing someone in his custody at some time or other and the individual finally paid him back with the ultimate price.

It is most unfortunate that our police are well known for abusing people in custody. Frankly, I am totally amazed this sort of thing isn't more common place.

U.S., Canada and other countries get confessions and resolve all manner of criminal cases without torturing and abusing suspects. Bahamas needs to step out of the dark ages!

Sorry for the cop, but, nobody stalks and shoots someone numerous times for no reason!

This is such an irresponsible comment. You have absolutely NO idea as to what may have transpired yet you are quite comfortable in putting the opinion out there that this has to do with him abusing someone...very irresponsible!!!
