AFTER several meetings, Environment and Housing Minister Romauld Ferreira finalised on Monday a planning team with public and private partners to organise an island-wide New Providence clean-up campaign.
The Keeping OUR Bahamas Beautiful initiative will be launched on National Heroes Day, Monday, October 9 and will encompass a phased clean-up approach with the island being divided into five zones. The scope of the clean-up will involve removal of derelict vehicles, lot clearances, removal of white waste which are household appliances, and will also incorporate rodent control.
"We are determined to educate our people, enforce our laws, and constantly monitor our communities to bring about sustained change in the way our surroundings are maintained," said Mr Ferreira.
The cleanup of New Providence will be supervised by inspectorate and solid waste management staff of the Department of Environmental Health Services.
"We understand that the aesthetics of litter free communities, clean green spaces and the like will not occur overnight but we are unwavering in our efforts to make a forceful impact and invite all residents to partner with us in keeping our Bahamas beautiful," he said.
The Ministry of the Environment and Housing in the coming weeks will announce the plans for the launch of the Keeping OUR Bahamas Beautiful campaign.

Is this the best from environment? We haven't heard anything for three months and the first announcement is the same ole "we pickin up da garbage"? What about the oil spill at Clifton, the toxic dump, the residents near BORCO? Not even some indication of when they will get to those items...nothing.

Great , but wait, what?
So what company has the contract for this? I imagine it's not everyone going to the street to do it themselves.
Where's the long term waste management solution?
Just require these damn places and spaces to call their collectors frequently enough or be fined heavily !
Talk to your bank friends about loans for public bin companies. Bring in a company to train of needed.
I haven't heard a thing about illegal dumping officers to patrol usual spots and enforce penalty.

It's like we're remedial. I'm almost ready to say that this must be a black thing because I've actually have never seen a manicured black area anywhere in the globe. The white people must have kept all that association dues and waste subscription knowledge to themselves. We just don't know how to do it. Trust me, those clean town abroad aren't the people picking up trash.
Sidewalk custodians means jobs.

The guy really has to lay out all the issues of waste in a special for people to grasp the seriousness. It would be a good way to show his knowledge gained of this sub environmental issue. I hope we're expecting one.

So.... This takes care of August, possibly September. What about October, November, December, January, February, March, April ,May, June and July? I'm almost positive people still have more garbage to throw out the window of their cars and more Kentucky box to leave by the park.

The place will not be clean until each home and yard takes personal responsibility for their garbage, bulk waste and broken-down vehicles ......... Just a few suggestions:
1. Tax each personal home, business and rental buildings for garbage ........ that will cover cost of the PPP initiative
2. Enforce the new license plates system and put a moratorium on new vehicles based on the number of private drivers, SD, heavy equipment and public/govt vehicles. The new system would hopefully eliminate the large numbers of unlicensed vehicles on the road now.
3. Create an incentive system for persons who get rid of their bulk waste (fridge, stove, bed, TV, gas tanks, tyres etc) to have them recycled etc.
4. Install a modern First World recycle-friendly facility ...... and make garbage a viable business like in Europe ...... or even just ship the garbage to Sweden and Germany .... It may be just as profitable as shipping sand and salt to America and Canada right now

Exactly. They could have a million campaigns a year and do nothing to change behavior. I was behind a car A?3464 on East St and Robinson Rd intersection on Thursday mid afternoon, when I saw something fly out their window, it was a little balled up napkin!!!?? Seriously? They couldn't keep that little piece of tissue in their car till they got home? Start brainwashing the children now.

It's about time that something is done about the trash and fiith strewn about the island of New Providence. From the moment one drives out of airport property one sees trash all along the roadside. I'd like to know why are they waiting until October.......are the waiting in hopes another hurricane will take away the trash??
Communities can start now to clean up! Let's not try making this a black/white thing. This is taking responsibility of keeping ones on property, community, and country clean and tidy.
This is ours mentioned a balled up napkin being tossed from a car window. When I was in the Immigration building in February, walking up to the 3rd (?) floor behind a female employee, who threw her white styrofoam container in the stairwell, I questioned why she couldn't take it to her office and but it in the trash. After she glared at me, sucked her teeth, looked me up and down then told me to stay out of her business!
I picked the up container myself. Once I was called in I took the container as well, telling the clerk and pointing out the women saying I'm sure she dropped this by accident and might need it later. She was so pissed off with me! The clerk called the woman over and have it to her.
I have to say it made my day!!

We have such an educated populace... even the educated group of commenters on this site (after filtering out the trash posts) why is it that your government officials seem to be unable to think critically and long term? Are they capable of conducting any form of research before jump-starting an initiative? We're not the only country in the world with these problems. A simple review of published literature would give these ministers a plethora of outlined plans for their simple ideas and avoid shoddy execution.
