BAHAMAS Power & Light (BPL) formally launched its brand on Friday, hoping to mark a new era for the country's electricity provider since PowerSecure was selected as its manager.
The company hosted events throughout the day that appealed to both customers and employees. They handed out gift bags to BPL employees at its Mall at Marathon branch and main office and it allowed customers who paid their bill yesterday to be eligible to win prizes, including $1,000.
BPL also unveiled its new main office building sign yesterday and hosted an hours-long celebration event for its employees, all of whom wore the company's newly unveiled shirt.
The company revealed its blue, yellow and green logo, which Pamela Hill, the CEO, said symbolises trust, growth and renewable energy respectively.
The move to name the institution BPL sprung in part from a desire for a complete brand break from its past, when it gained a reputation for unreliability and profit loss.
So far, under the management of PowerSecure, BPL has been plagued with the same problems, and is frequently a target of criticism and frustration for Bahamians who suffer power cuts.
"We know reliability is the biggest element in terms of services that customers expect and demand," Ms Hill said.
Ronnie Brannen, President of PowerSecure International, attended Friday's events as well and said efforts are underway to strengthen the reliability of the company's services.
He said: "If you think about reliability, what we did was we identified some areas that need to be rebuilt. For example, we have an underground feeder that goes from Big Pond to Blue Hills. It seems to be the weak link. So we had a schedule of 90 days to rebuild that. We compressed the schedule and will finish in 45.
"So, now when we have an outage, this express feeder between Big Pond and Blue Hills will expedite restoration by several hours. So every time there's an outage we work hard to get to the root cause, identify what happened, what can we do to prevent it and more than that we're finally getting out front to do some preventative work instead of just reacting to the outage."
Despite yesterday's formal launch, BPL has still not released its business management plan.
Hurricane Matthew was seen as a setback for the company last year when it left behind a trail of costly damage.
Ms Hill said the company is not yet able to say how much the hurricane cost the company.

I almost couldn't believe this picture. Seriously BPL?
"*Balloons are great at birthdays, weddings, graduations and more, but once they get loose, balloons can pose a threat to many animals. Birds, turtles and other animals commonly mistake balloons for food, which can harm or even kill them. In addition, many animals can become entangled in balloon strings, which can strangle them or hurt their feet and hands.*"

Brilliant. Those balloons are going to be awesome for our environment. Someone literally sat in an office at BPL/BEC and thought "Hey, let's release balloons as a sign of how awesome and environmentally responsible we are as an organization." Brilliant.

Disorganized event at the Mall at Marathon where customers were rushing to pay electricity bills with just a few dollars deposited to get a chance to spin the wheel for a prize. Chaos as those there were calling their friends and family to rush through the traffic to pay a few dollars on their bill to get a chance to spin the wheel. The mc with a bull horn in the small space (inside the BEC Marathon office with the door closed as customers enter) and no apparent procedure correlating the bill payment with the chance to win a spin at the spinning wheel. From the photo above it appears that the flag was measured too long as it would cover the BPL logo. The PR money should have been spent at fixing some of the street lights still not working or the lamp pole almost falling over in front Sun Tee on Shirley St which half the island sees daily for the past four months after the hurricane.

Actually not a bullhorn but two larger speaker systems. The large flag to unveil the sign. The lamp pole is across the street from SunTee which should be a major concern as it carries live wires and an number of wires likely phone, internet, cable and rather than it falling and hurting passers bye and blocking traffic with metal pole and wires all over. No sense re branding for something now known to be worse as the hurricane experience just proved when they should have stayed with the same name BEC a product accepted for continuous blackouts. You do nor rebrand until the product is known to be better. Calling something by a different name does not change it.

BPL is just a foreign front for the failed BEC that is mired in mega-millions of dollars of debt with aged and unkept electrical generating plants and distribution systems that are now on their very last legs. Crooked Christie put the BPL mask on BEC in an effort to hide and deflect blame away from himself for his corrupt government's failure to ensure it was being properly maintained and upkept to meet the vital electrical needs of most of our country. BPL have been only too happy to play the part of a mask on BEC because they are being so very handsomely rewarded to do so off of the backs of Bahamian taxpayers. Hurricane Matthew took the BPL mask off of BEC revealing just how bad the failed BEC situation has now become. Crooked Christie's corrupt PLP government had to pay PowerSecure an untold fortune to bring in trucks, equipment and personnel from the U.S. in an effort to restore power to most communities because BEC itself has been robbed blind over the years and is now a hollow worthless shell with only mega-millions of debt on its books and in need of mega-millions more in capital to try and resurrect it from the dead. Crooked Christie can run, but as an emporer with no clothes, he cannot hide from all of the injustices he has perpetrated on the Bahamian people.

**MINNIS, AND MINNIS ALONE, WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PLP WINNING THE NEXT GENERAL ELECTION AGAINST IMPOSSIBLE ODDS IF HE DOESN'T TURN THE FNM OVER TO JUST ABOUT ANYONE ELSE.....BUT FIRST HE SHOULD HELP WITH THE DUMPING THE VERY GREEDY AND CORRUPT IDIOT, SIDNEY COLLIE, WHO CURRENTLY SERVES AS THE PARTY'S CHAIRMAN. NO ONE IS GOING TO VOTE FOR THE FNM IF MINNIS AND/OR COLLIE ARE STILL IN THE PICTURE COME ELECTION TIME. THAT'S THE SIMPLE REALITY OF THE SITUATION AND CROOKED CHRISTIE KNOWS IT AND MINNIS MUST NOW STRONGLY SENSE IT. THE BAHAMIAN PEOPLE WILL MAKE MINNIS THE MOST HATED BREATHING BAHAMIAN IF HE INSISTS ON SINGLE HANDEDLY BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR GIVING THE CORRUPT CROOKED CHRISTIE-LED PLP GOVERNEMNT ANOTHER FIVE YEARS DURING WHICH TIME THEY WILL COMPLETELY DESTROY THE BAHAMAS.**

Comrade Ronnie Brannen, President of BPL/BEC. What if you just keep the lights on - and leave it to Ronald McDonald to spend money on balloons - okay!
