A POLICE officer shot and killed a man early on Wednesday morning after the suspect, along with three other armed men, allegedly “accosted” the officer during his morning run.
The incident took place around 5.30am in the South Beach area.
Officer in Charge of the Central Detective Unit, Chief Superintendent Clayton Fernander said the other suspects turned themselves into the South Beach Police station a short time after the incident.
“Sometime around 5.30am, a member of your Royal Bahamas Police was doing his morning exercise in this general area on Bamboo Boulevard, when a small vehicle pulled up beside him and four males exited the vehicle all armed with handguns. The officer being in fear for his life, produced his service weapon and fired shots,” Chief Supt Fernander said.
“As a result one of the culprits was fatally shot. They got back into the vehicle and drove off. Shortly after, two young men showed up at the South Beach Police Station in the vehicle which had gunshot damage. We have them in custody and they are assisting police with respect to the investigation.”
Anyone with information on this shooting is asked to contact police at 911 or 919, the Central Detective Unit at 502-9991 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 328-TIPS.

Because criminals are 'just bright enough to be dangerous.'
And because they always, always, 'spin it' by blaming their targets.
They likely tried to peddle a tale of woe that they were minding their business, driving from early morning church services enroute to PMH where they all work as neurosurgeons, when this mean old copper up and shot 'em out of the blue.
Everything they do, they make the fault of their targets. And they stupidly believe that 'getting there first' with the report will make it harder if not impossible for their target victim to tell his side of it.
Cops always look especially closely at people who 'insinuate themselves into the investigation'.

The accosted policed officer is alive today only because he was carrying a hand gun at the time of the incident. What about the rest of us?! Anyone with an ounce of sense knows that you must be "packing" whenever out and about or risk becoming the next statistic. Better to break the law and be armed to protect yourself, your family and your friends rather than be unarmed and suffer the deadly consequences.

Don't agree, don't know if that means I only have half an ounce of sense. I know one particular individual that I wouldn't want to carry a baseball bat much less a gun. They are explosive with a capital "E". Little things trigger them off. I would be afraid for them or anyone they got into an argument with. Our country seems to be rife with these jeckyl and hyde personalities. Someone in parliament "must" know how these guns are getting in, someone is profiting.

I shear your opinion. . .but people like that can now get guns on the street. . .the jist of mudda-take-sic is the rest of us are "caught unarmed" too many times by thugs who are armed and spoiling to "do us in". . .making sure that hot heads don't get guns must be done by the leaders them. . .don't forget them leaders them gone get guns or people with guns around them 24/7. . .I posit that if hand guns become legal in this nation the high rate of murder will go down . . .not up. . .

"Better tried by twelve than carried by six" goes the old saying; agree.
In America, despite the media's lies to the contrary, states with the most relaxed gun laws which allow concealed carry by citizens enjoy the lowest rates of crime.

Actually... any civilized force instructs its officer to be armed and vigilant at all times. Putting on a uniform makes one a target. Even though the officer was running, and presumably in workout clothes, we don't yet know if he was being stalked because of the mere fact that he was an officer.

Our country is still in bad shape though.

A bad story with a happy ending. You forfeit your life when you try to hold someone up. Swift Justice.
But strange that they turned themselves in, while they may be scum, at least they brought themselves to justice.

First we all put security screens on our windows, then security bars, then alarm systems in our homes, then additional lighting around our properties (notwithstanding the exorbitant cost of electricity), then replaced our home doors with much more secure ones, then built high walls around our properties, then put razor wire or broken chips of glass on our high walls, then moved into gated communities with much of the foregoing also, then stopped going out at night, then this and then that......now guess who the prisoners are....certainly not the hard core criminals roaming our streets.....WE ARE THE PRISONERS LIVING IN FEAR SPENDING MOST OF OUR TIME LOCKED UP IN OUR OWN HOMES! Many of us have had enough and now choose to bear arms so that we least have a fighting chance when that hard core rapist or murderer attacks us or one of our loved ones, And yes, you can sit in your well fortified home in solitary confinement in a state of fear and denial, but things are so bad in our country today that it is only a matter of time before you will be confronted by a low life gun carrying thug no matter where you are or where you live. The balance of probability is very much tilted against all of us thanks to the Crooked Christie-led corrupt PLP government.

@Well_mudda_take_sic: At least you are one of the lucky ones who can afford the high cost of all the measures you apparently have taken in an effort to protect yourself and your family from the rapists and murderous thugs roaming around everywhere in our country. Just think how unlucky and fearful the rest of us are! I fully agree with you though that one may as well be dead if one is foolish enough not to be armed given the out-of-control crime ridden country we live in today.

The problem with most of us is that we inject politics into eeeevery single thing. Are you doing your part socially and morally? Take responsibility bro. Stop using the PLP, or any other political party for that matter, as a scapegoat. The problem is us. The sooner you realize, accept it and do your part to change it, the better.

The story said that four males pulled up behind the officer and all four had hand guns, the police shot and killed one and the others turn themselves in. That story don't sound right, four men with guns against one officer and the officer killed one and not one of them shot the officer and to add to the story they turn themselves in.

The 4 bandits are probably (luckily) terrible shots. I can picture these punks jumping around (probably drunk and stoned), gun sideways, trying to shoot someone on the move yelling 'shoot him dread' and 'bitch!' every time they pull the trigger.

This story is a strange one... just saying...Why would anyone try to rob a jogger? How much of value would they have on them? If four dudes have guns, why would they wait for the officer to start shooting, kill one of their friends and then turn themselves in? Something just ain't right. this story isnt passing the sniff test.

People have robbed joggers in the past, but the story does sound strange. Don't want to pass judgement, but it's a weird story. The only plausible thing I can think of is they wanted to get help for their friend. These guys aren't wired to run to the police to report anything, they have their own justice system.
