Is this two truck operation a scam?

EDITOR, The Tribune.

I think someone needs to investigate what appears to be a scam being operated by a tow truck driver who hangs around the downtown area and others whom I suspect are police officers.

Every day of the week this guy tows at least ten or more cars and stashes them in the vacant lot at the western end of Dowdeswell Street. He even chains the wheels of the cars so even if the owner finds their car they can’t drive it away unless they pay. The tow truck operator apparently has some sort of thin metal strap which he slides down between the car window and the door by which he is able to open the door then the hood to disconnect the battery. This has to be illegal. If the driver and one cop split a towing fee of eighty dollars for each car they’re probably each pulling in at least two thousand a week.

I would report this to the police if I thought they would do something but maybe if you published this they might be more inclined to investigate it and some of the victims might be encouraged to come forward and make an official complaint without fear of victimisation.

This sort of thing is nothing short of daylight robbery.

Is he towing cars parked illegally? If so, then people just need to park in legal parking spots and problem solved. #decentlyandinorder

Just hope the only thing they are paying is for the towing...if they get slapped with a formal parking ticket I think the flat fee on that is what $250?

Need to know the laws of the land. If a vehicle is not obstructing traffic, the only thing the police can do is give the driver a ticket. The wrecker driver can be sued for braking and entering into a persons private vehicle. They do not have the right to tow no vehicle that is parked in a no parking zone unless it is a loading zone, fire zone, ambulance zone etc. that service vehicles need to utilize. I had a vehicle towed before by a wrecker driver of frederick street and the vehicle got damaged and the wrecker driver had to pay for damages caused and i did not pay no towing fee.
