Monday 9.45am update: ACCORDING to Leslie Miller, the MP for Tall Pines, the fire has come dangerously close to the gas company on Gladstone Road and trucks have been deployed there to prevent an explosion.
The fire also crept into the yard at Aquinas College on Sunday night but was extinguished before any damage could be done to the buildings. The College is closed on Monday.
Overnight reports are that no houses were burned or destroyed. Royal Bahamas Defence Force marines were on security detail all night in affected areas, ensuring homes were not vandalised or broken into.
Depending on the winds easing, residents will be able to return home later on Monday morning from shelters at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium and Mario's Bowling.
The Bahamas Humane Society took in five animals from Jubilee Gardens on Sunday night and reports that it is set up for an influx on Monday. The BHS is asking for food, bowls, towels, pet crates or cages (clearly labelled so they can be returned).
JUBILEE Gardens residents have been evacuated after a "massive" blaze broke out on Sunday at the city dump sending plumes of choking smoke billowing over parts of New Providence. Emergency services were tackling the fire from early afternoon and the Flamingo Gardens clinic will stay open until 9pm to help residents suffering from smoke inhalation as the Princess Margaret Hospital Accident and Emergency Department was said to be "overflowing".
Fire chief Assistant Superintendent Walter Evans said the fire at the landfill was producing "heavy amounts" of smoke and called for all of the residents of Jubilee Gardens to evacuate and to seek safe shelter. He said the fire was being fuelled by the heavy winds of the past few days and he asked people to leave their homes and seek respite until the fire is extinguished.
On Sunday afternoon, Mr Evans reported that some residents had already sought medical attention from smoke inhalation. He asked for family and relatives to help with the evacuated residents. The Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium has been designated as the shelter for people to head to.
Patricia Laing, Patient Relations Supervisor in the Accident and Emergency Department at the Princess Margaret Hospital, told The Tribune: "The Flamingo Gardens Clinic will be open until 9pm tonight to assist persons who have been affected by the fire in Jubilee Gardens as PMH A&E is overflowing."
Mr Evans said that three fires had broken out simultaneously on the island in which homes were being threatened and fire services deployed. As well as the landfill blaze, one home was destroyed and one extensively damaged in the Charles Vincent Street area. At the same time in the Farrington Road area a large number of homes were threatened by another fire. Several fire units had been posted there. People were told to turn off their power supply and soak their roofs with water in order to help the fire services.
Prime Minister Perry Christie visited the scene near the dump on Sunday afternoon.
At statement from the government on Sunday night said that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) had activated its emergency plan and suggested the fires had been started deliberately.
"The Emergency Services are currently battling a major fire at the Public Landfill," the statement read.
"By order of the Police, an Evacuation Order has been isssued covering residents living in the surrounding area of Jubilee Gardens. Residents are urged to leave the area immediately and take all necessary precautions to ensure their personal safety, and the safety of their loved ones.
"Those living in the affected areas are advised that evacuation facilities have been established at the [Kendal Isaacs Gym in Oakes Field].
"The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has activated it’s Emergency Plan, and all available resources have been mobilised.
"Although it is too early to be certain, at first sight it appears that a number of fires were started in the area. Because of the high winds currently being experienced on New Providence, it appears that at least one of those fires blew across the boundary and ignited the Public Landfill.
"Prime Minister Perry Christie was on the scene shortly after the scale and intensity of the blaze was confirmed. The Heads of the Key Emergency Services, along with Captain Russell of NEMA, Ministers of the relevant government agencies and departments, along with a number of local Members of Parliament, have all been in attendance.
"In line with the technical advice given, Prime Minister Christie confirmed that the government will reach out to international partners for assistance, if and when the situation warrants it.
"Prime Minister Christie said: 'The number one priority is to ensure that everyone is safe. I am confident that the Emergency Services are doing whatever is required to make certain that no-one comes to harm. We have already made every resource available to limit the damage to property, and to minimise environmental harm.'
"Officials have advised members of the public to monitor official news channels for information, and not to rely on rumours on social media for information. Further statements will be issued once more information is known."
Last night NEMA announced the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium would be managed by social workers and Royal Bahamas Defence Force personnel and could hold up to 400 people from Jubilee Gardens, Victoria Gardens and surrounding communities.
The high winds and gusts which have been driving the smoke are forecast to last into the week.
Last night Aquinas College posted a note to parents saying the school would be closed on Monday because of the fire and smoke emanating from the landfill.

Why does it almost always seem that we are always operating in crisis mode? When will they ever conclude that there's a need to operate proactively as opposed to retroactively. Invest HEAVILY in all your emergency services (i.e. Fire, Airport Department, ambulance agency), equipment (not just the vehicle), continuous regular training refresher and learning new procedures, man power, contingency plans, acquire a bambi bucket (water bucket) let coast guard helicopter and DEA chopper to drop water from the air.

Yes. With the high winds this could turn into "anything". The wind could change direction, the fire could jump lines, it's a very dangerous situation for the entire island.

The wind is very predictable. There is a cold front blowing through. For over a week now we knew that on Friday the wind was going to come up from the ENE at 25 knots gusting 30. The wind is slowly clocking around to the SE over the next two days until it drops but not completely. The wind is forecast to be up for nearly 8 more days.
Any person with common sense should know that if there was a fire before the winds increased on Friday it needed to be controlled/contained.
Once again the people that managed these things, sit with the thumbs in their asses making excuses that someone else started this fire yadayadayada.
Why in the Bahamas do people not get fired and sued for this shit. People need to be held accountable!!!
Let's not forget to mention all the polluted air that others on island are forced to breathe. If you think it's bad now wait for the wind to die 9 days from now, and it gets warm and the fire is smuldering.
Anyhow I am glad to not be in Nassau subjected to this shit.

These people are not serious. Exactly what purpose do they serve standing around catching gap seed? Real leaders would have immediately gone to their command center and ensured that they were getting hourly updates on the deployment of resources, ensuring that teams were adequately staffed, reaching out to international bodies in case the situation worsens. But par for the course they will wait for it to get worse then talk about how grim it is. Every government minister does not need to be sitting out there like an owl!! Do the job you got elected to do LEAD. PLEASE. This is ridiculous.

The young Bahamian guy that presented his project to fix the problem at the dump site had his project taken from him and passed on to friends, family and lovers ...but they failed, as they will fail with all the other Bahamian originated project that were denied only to show up as some other person’s project. ...I still waiting to hear what went down with the backdoor deal to sell BEC (what was it buy for a $1 from the Bahamian People then resell for $400) ...someone made some big money in that deal. ...and now look at the mess we have to live with, unreliable BPL when a much better deal was on the table that would have lowered the cost of electricity to $0.14 KWH using brand new LNP and wind powered generators.
Anything this PLP government touches fails ....

The bottom line is that the dump has to be moved! When it was placed on the Harold Road site it was at 'the edge of the city. Now it is virtually in the heart of the city as communities have grown all around the dump and as the wind shifts round a nd round the entire island is affected. Even runways at the airport has to be closed from time to time. The government was duped by those clowns and alleged criminals who claimed they could manage the dump. Their first suggestion should have been to relocate it. A suitable site would be one that is more secure and has less access points. Possibly one that will have the smoke blowing out to sea when the wind is blowing in its most common direction, in the likely event that there is a fire. Right now the dump is like a great demonic alter. When it is afire everyone must cover their noses and bow.

It's ridiculous, the President cannot order wire taps. That's illegal, Donald Trump doesn't have a clue that's why he can make such an outrageous statement. And he does it so that people like yourself can jump on it and repeat it. He will soon tell us he found a black robe in the closet and Obama was practicing wizardry.
Wire taps are initiated from the FBI or the Department of Justice and only when they have probable cause. Clueless Donald Trump doesn't realize that if there was a tap, someone had probable cause to believe he was involved in something very serious. It's like shouting to the world someone's suing me for fraud, well that opens up a whole can of worms. "Why?"

Obama as POTUS was the number one customer of intelligence gathered by all 17 U.S. intelligence agencies, including the FBI. Therefore he did not have to order 'his' intelligence agencies to do anything. He could have merely suggested to a high ranking member of 'his' national security team' that a wiretapping should be done in which case it got done posthaste, probably with the rubber stamping of a special court judge after the fact. All of the criminal leaks occurring in DC these days are sadly going to eventually come back to haunt Obama.

Our winds blow from the southest to the northwest for most of the year which means the dump ideally should be relocated to somewhere in the Clifton Bay area. This is the reason why Runway 14 at Nassau International Airport is our nation's busiest runway. Runway 14 has a compass heading of 140 degrees - almost due southeast. For safety reasons aeroplanes take off and land into the wind to the maximum extent possible. Only on very occasional days would residents of Lyford Cay, Old Fort or Albany be inconvenienced by smoke from dump fires if the public dump is relocated to the Clifton Bay area.

Experts repeatedly recommended to the Pindling, Ingraham and Christie administrations that a cargo terminal facility be developed at Clifton Bay in the area where BEC's main plant is located and the sea is sufficiently deep. Such a facility would have achieved the dual purpose of (1) moving all shipping and freight congestion away from the downtown area, and (2) facilitated relocating the main public dump to the Clifton Bay area where the more toxic waste could be barged to a more suitable site on Andros, 25 miles away. But the half-dozen or so influential white Bahamian families (like the Symonettes) who have always owned and controlled the docks downtown would hear none of it, fearing that they would lose a grip on their highly profitable shipping and freight businesses. Sadly, Pindling, Ingraham and Christie all cowered to the wishes of the 'ole white boys, as if their personal financial interests mean more than the lives of many thousands of black Bahamians whose lives are being or have been prematurely cut short by the hazardous highy toxic fumes of smoke. Crooked Christie knows no shame. He may as well have been flipping his middle finger to all those individuals who have for many years now been greatly suffering from the life threatening (and life taking) unending public dump fires.

Shameless Crooked Christie is all set to say the following when he next stands in the house of assemby: "Mr. Speaker, I was there. Yes, Mr. Speaker I was right there - at the very edge of the recent dump fire. I got to see and experience first hand the heat of the flames and the choking smoke. I looked around but could not see the leaders of the FNM and DNA - perhaps because of the thick smoke. Surely they were there too Mr. Speaker, somewhere there, because I would have thought that they too would have recognized the importance of being there, like I was, to witness first hand the hardship these dump fires cause so many of our people. Mr. Speaker, all of the resources available to my government were brought to bear by me, yes Mr. Speaker, by me personally, to control and put out the raging fire that day as quickly as possible. And Mr. Speaker, I want the people to know that I fully intend to now take personal charge, yes, me personally, of finding an appropriate solution to this vitally important matter at the earliest possible time. And so Mr. Speaker, the people can take comfort in knowing that their Prime Minister, yes, me personally, now has this most important in hand, yes my own hand Mr. Speaker, as a matter of the utmost priority. Thank you Mr. Speaker for letting me provide, today, this highest level of assurance to the people that their suffering caused by smoke from the dump fires will soon be a thing of the past."
