PUBLIC reaction to the Progressive Liberal Party’s recent convention on Friday ranged widely from faith in leader-elect Philip “Brave” Davis’ ability to secure a PLP victory in the next general election; to concern about what Glenys Hanna Martin’s defeat means for women in politics to general disinterest in the party and Bahamian politics on the whole.
The Tribune canvassed job seekers at the Kendal Isaacs National Gymnasium to poll their opinions on the PLP convention held October 23rd-26th.
Davona Ramsey, 22, said while she did not follow the convention, she would have preferred a woman leader.
“I was not there and...I’m not really political," Ms Ramsey said.
"I think the PLP is wonderful, is a wonderful party and everything, but I’m not really political or anything like that to really have much to say. But I saw it on the news and I saw a little insight on it. It was really good, it was interesting but not really for me.”
She continued: “I’m very fierce on strong women in leadership, so I would really have hoped that [Ms Hanna Martin] would have prevailed, but I would understand our country probably didn’t see her as a good fit. But I am very strong on women in leadership, women in power, women doing things that most people thought that we couldn’t. So I am very strong about that.”
“I honestly believe [Ms Hanna Martin’s loss] was more about her gender," Ms Ramsey added, "because a lot of people don’t believe in women having that much authority. They were a little controversial when it came to our Governor General being a woman, so our Prime Minister as well they probably was not having it at that time.”
An 18-year-old woman, who requested anonymity, said she believed Mr Davis will help the PLP secure the next general election.
“He could be more better than Perry Christie," the 18-year-old said.
"He could do what Perry Christie was trying to do or trying to finish.”
Unlike Ms Ramsey, the teen said she found it “fair” that there are significantly fewer women than men in positions of political leadership in the Bahamas. However, she declined to elaborate on her thoughts on the matter.
A 59-year-old man said: “I finish with them (PLP). I don’t fool with them. I give up on them. I used to be a hard PLP but I can’t fool with them. They did too much wrong to the people.”
When asked about “Brave” Davis’ ability to secure a PLP victory, the 59-year-old man said: “Well I can’t say much about him.”
Kaylea Albury, 20, told The Tribune she did not follow the PLP convention or pay attention to who was running for party leadership, but instead expressed admiration for the Free National Movement government.
Ms Albury said: “I feel the FNM is doing an awesome job since they went into power, because of certain situations what I have seen or heard about, especially during the hurricane season and helping those from the island especially. I feel the FNM is doing a good job so far.”
A 29-year-old woman, who requested anonymity, said: “Me personally I’m not voting next [election].”
“I just feel like if I ask for only one simple thing," she said, "I’m not asking you for the world, just to place me where I know I could be able to work and don’t have to worry about getting laid off tomorrow or what’s not. That’s all I ask. And since everybody done get they position, they forget about the people.
"And I meaning FNM-wise and PLP-wise," the 29-year-old continued, "so I just feel like not voting next election.”

Don't discount the stupidity of the Bahamian electorate who could vote these jokers back into government if progress under the FNM is not as quick as it would like. Minnis and crew need to use their time in power wisely. 5 years will pass quickly and they have made a moderate to slow start.

"Don't discount the stupidity of the Bahamian electorate?" Your inflated arrogance and bigotry is only surpassed by your ignorance of being incapable to accept that Bahamians proved on May 10th to be savvier than supposed "educated" people like you can never manage to comprehend!

I really don’t know what you are talking about.
Honestman is absolutely right! The Bahamian electorate did a good job this year... but I still don’t trust them at times. They forget too easily.

I think a law should be passed that all eligible voters are required to study basic arithmetic so they might have a slight understanding of how perilous a financially state the PLP left the country in.

Trump won based on the electoral college system and Brave won based on the delegate voting system. Both systems designed to get men unfairly elected.

I see this too. . .if the DNA can rid itself of its Chairman. . .Shelly Moss and its current leader. . .gut that party as did doc with the FNM and Brave Davis must do with the PLP but will not do!! But. . .even as I say the DNA will remain in the political wilderness . . .THEY ARE THE NEXT ELEMENT IN BAHAMIAN POLITICS. . .THE PLP IS DEAD FOREVER. . .YOU MUST REMEBER THAT THE YOUNG PEOPLE CAME FORTH TO DESTROY THE PLP ON MAY 10. . .they will never allow them crooks to return to government. . .just like us young people in 1967 destroyed the UBP and never allowed them to return to our government again. . .their corruption was just too wide and too deeply ingrained within their mind sets! The PLP is dead. . .FOREVER! Selection Fred and Brave only serves to constantly remind us why we attempted to destroy them last election!!

The prayer of the common man/woman in the Bahamas. Sad.
This morning I woke up in a bright sunny place, planning what to do with a delicious weekend off to explore and do stuff and eat different foods. Then I came here to the online Tribune, and I can't believe how bad I feel. I can't believe the negative feelings that it conjures up. I can't believe the small mindedness of the PLP supporters. The Bahamas lives on the edge of sadness tinged with an evilness that is pervasive. It brings up feelings of the worst kind in me. It changes me from feeling very placid to wanting to punch someone in the face real hard. The karma is very bad.
I have to leave this site for awhile even though I am addicted to goings-on in my homeland. There is a better way, but it een here. There is a Happyville, but you need a good garden for it The garden here is barren, withered and dry.

The PLP has moved on from Perry ......... but the scum is still on the cup ....... the organization is still dirty, grimy and stinking ............. The PLP needs to be disinfected ...... and Sears, Rigby and Galanis have been locked out of the inner circle ........ so the PLP will die slowly of its own internal disease.

I hope more of the Bahamain electorate would continue to be awoken over the next five years to the gravity of the situation our country is in. The daily talk shows and the print media have a huge part to play in making this happen. The clowns in the PLP always put on a good show but it seams like only a certain segment of the population supports their shenanigans activity. This is the 21st century and while the world moves forward The Bahamas has to play catch up in many critical areas, the thirst for power by the currupt tainted leaders of the PLP will be met by a intelligent youthfull voting population next time around. We must keep them out and let this country reach its potential. Shame on MR C C for teaming up with that smiling clown. The Old guard should be relegated to the political dump heap for the mess they have done to this country. In many other countries around the world they all would have been jailed and in some cases banished.

You talking good, man ........... I agree with you. Chester is making a big mistake ......... except he is willing to be dragged through Davis' scum and wait for another decade at least before Davis fold up (like Perry).

Bahamians have become hoodwinked by their reliance on post-1967 politicians for "free education" and "soft office jobs" ...... both have ruined Bahamian social initiative and economic independence.
Brave does not offer any shift from the PLP status quo.
